wiped and flashed a new rom because of a couple oddities I have been noticing with cm10.2

TiBu was acting ghey when I was trying to restore apps. It would just randomly stop on some and have parsing errors and shit. Changed the backup folder (standard 4.3 fix for TiBu) and rebooted. At boot it gave me an error about inconsistent UIDs and that my device will be unstable. The "OK" button said "I'm feeling lucky" lol :uhoh:

Fixed permissions via TWRP and the error went away but TiBu is still being a bitch. :blah:

Carbon seems to playing nice with me. Dev support seems great, and they are cool dudes.

stonehenge
09-25-2013, 04:40 PM
I think I'm going to try Carbon, Xenon, or Shiny

I tried some random rom I found because the comments sounded nice and it was pretty much stock with themes and a couple mods (reboot menu, clear all in recents, long press to change tracks, etc). It seems to be running fast enough but I've had these problems on my phone:

- Can't set wallpaper from gallery (cannot save cropped image error)
- Can't restore certain apps (Instagram and a few others) via TiBu but they install fine from the market. 90% of apps restored fine though.
- Certain apps fail to install from the market (Candy Crush lol)
- UIDs not matching, had to fix permissions

IDK if I trust this rom :jester:

The strange part is, I put the same rom on my wifes phone (same phone except 16gb instead of 32gb) and it has no problems so far. All apps restored fine, no errors, no weirdness with wallpaper, etc. :think:

:orly: wonder if it werks at MR

stonehenge
10-10-2013, 06:45 PM
If you can acquire a TMo phone for cheap, you can get service for $3 a day if you want to test when you go to MR one time. You'll have to call TMo and make sure that the $3/day comes with the free international data/text. I think it will because the $3/day is unlimited calls/text with like 200mb of 4G data (unlimited 2g after that).

http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/pay-by-the-day-cell-phone-plans

worth a try if you can find a cheap enough phone to test with

---------- Post added at 10:45 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:42 AM ----------

Looks like you need to sign up for a Simple Choice plan to get the free global text/data:

http://www.t-mobile.com/cell-phone-plans/simple-choice-international-plan-countries.html

.20/min calls and free text/data. sounds win if it works at MR and home/work.

it should be a xenon thing, look inside Settings and find the category that Xenon adds (forget what it's called on that rom) then look for statusbar or transparency or something. It's probably set to transparent right now, just adjust that slider when you find it.

stonehenge
10-14-2013, 05:16 PM
I've been running Shiny since last week and it has been great. Battery life seems better, phone seems quicker, and overall it is MUCH more stable. No random reboots or anything anymore.

I found mods made for the rom to enable a kill all button on recents, some modifications to the quick toggles, etc. The only thing I'm missing is long-press volume to change tracks. Miss that real bad.

Otherwise it is stock 4.3 and I loves it. Still want to try out Xposed to apply a theme.

Hopefully this dude releases a 4.3.1 version of this.

yep install xposed app. then inside that app install their framework. might have to reboot. then install whatever modules you want. i think you have to reboot after every install. alot of the indiv. mods work without reboot. they say if they req. a reboot.

http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/1oe6f9/reminder_to_those_of_you_which_have_not_yet/ccrcwh5

Three different people are telling me I'm wrong but I could have sworn that ROM installations automatically wipe /system/... right?

M.B Co
10-14-2013, 08:35 PM
I think it depends on the rom and how they build it.

Most roms do not wipe anything but maybe..... dalvik and cache. 4.3 Roms clear the cache for you.

I've wiped caches and data and the device admin always stuck in place if I recall correctly.

which one are you?

unmount("/system");

I'm looking at these parts towards the beginning:

1. It mounts /system/, copies a few things from there that it wants to preserve, then unmounts it:
run_program("/sbin/busybox", "mount", "/system");
run_program("/sbin/busybox", "mount", "-o", "rw,remount", "/system", "/system");
run_program("/sbin/busybox", "mount", "-o", "rw,remount", "/", "/");
run_program("/sbin/busybox", "cp", "/system/app/Superuser.apk", "/Superuser.apk");
run_program("/sbin/busybox", "cp", "/system/xbin/su", "/su");
run_program("/sbin/busybox", "cp", "/system/etc/init.d/99SuperSUDaemon", "/init.d/99SuperSUDaemon");
run_program("/sbin/busybox", "cp", "/system/xbin/daemonsu", "/daemonsu");
run_program("/sbin/busybox", "cp", "/system/bin/.ext/.su", "/.ext/.su");
run_program("/sbin/busybox", "cp", "/system/etc/install-recovery.sh", "/install-recovery.sh");
unmount("/system");

2. formats /system/:
format("ext4", "EMMC", "/dev/block/platform/omap/omap_hsmmc.0/by-name/system", "0", "/system");
mount("ext4", "EMMC", "/dev/block/platform/omap/omap_hsmmc.0/by-name/system", "/system");

3. copies new rom files to /system/, copies "preserved" files from earlier, removes temporary "preserved" files:
package_extract_dir("system", "/system");
run_program("/sbin/busybox", "cp", "/Superuser.apk", "/system/app/Superuser.apk");
run_program("/sbin/busybox", "cp", "/su", "/system/xbin/su");
run_program("/sbin/busybox", "cp", "--parents", "/.ext/.su", "/system/bin");
run_program("/sbin/busybox", "cp", "/daemonsu", "/system/xbin/daemonsu");
run_program("/sbin/busybox", "cp", "--parents", "/init.d/99SuperSUDaemon", "/system/etc");
run_program("/sbin/busybox", "cp", "/install-recovery.sh", "/system/etc/install-recovery.sh");
run_program("/sbin/busybox", "rm", "/Superuser.apk");
run_program("/sbin/busybox", "rm", "/su");
run_program("/sbin/busybox", "rm", "-r", "/init.d");
run_program("/sbin/busybox", "rm", "/daemonsu");
run_program("/sbin/busybox", "rm", "/install-recovery.sh");
run_program("/sbin/busybox", "rm", "-r", "/.ext");

stonehenge

bootloader on vzw being unlocked? probably not

i'm guessing you'd need safestrap or something. are there xPosed modules that play well with Touchwiz? If so, you could just use root and xPosed to get a lot of the rom features

JayBo

already rooted. Just wanna get rid of some of this bloatware, which I could do with Titanium.
A theme chooser would be nice. And maybe Nova Launcher.

Nothing too fancy.

stonehenge

You can install Nova right now and either use Titanium or a file manager to remove bloatware.

You may want to look into xPosed for the themes. The Mikes have themes on their stock rooted Motorolas.

So..
On s3 what would make the phonr incredibly slow. Like for example pressing in a text box to type and tskes 10+ seconds for keyboard to appear.
This even happens after a battery pull.
Ive checked everything I know to . check. Im on the verge of rooting it anf flashing a bare minimum rom or titanium to disable stuff. Individually to see what it is. Anything specific I should check first?

Clear cache. Phone off, hold vol up, home, and power to get into recovery, wipe cache partition.

Too many texts? Try deleting unneeded text threads or all of them. Sometimes they can cause shit.

Try a memory app. Not one that auto kills or anything but just to see if there's an app whoring up all your RAM.

theholycow

You can do that?!@#$

Hell yeah. Google Voice is pretty cool. My texts come to any/all cell phones, email addresses, tablets without cell service using wifi, and browser if I have the Google Voice page open. Calls come to any/all cell and landline phones, tablets without cell service using wifi, and browser if I have gmail open. I can send texts and make calls using the same list of devices, too. Plus I can enable call screening for certain contacts or groups.

---------- Post added at 09:19 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:18 AM ----------

Also, you can text via your PC without Google Voice by using email-SMS gateways.

Yup. As coa mentioned. You can d/l a Chrome Extension for Google Voice to display notifications for text and missed calls. You can setup your PC to ring if you are getting an incoming call and answer via the PC/Chrome Browser.

When I get to work I just type in voice.google and it comes up my page/number. As mentioned, you can push it to any tablet or device.

One other neat thing is I can call from Gmail by just clicking a number. I hardly use my office phone anymore for calls. I can initiate a call all from my Chrome browser.

theholycow

You mean SMS on your cell phone? Options include:

3. uh...I had a third idea but I forgot.

M.B Co
10-30-2013, 03:17 PM
May check with your provider. Not all of them like the idea of porting your number to Google. I am on Sprint and they work close together to make sure the experience is fluid.

I am sure there are 3rd party apps that do the same thing.

They may not like it but AFAIK there's nothing they can do about it.

I didn't port my number, I have just been giving out my gvoice number instead. Eventually I might port it and keep both numbers on gvoice (you can do that). I'd port it now but Virgin Mobile will cancel my account and I'll lose my $25/month grandfathered plan. I might let it go, drop Virgin, and just use the free plan at RingPlus, but I need more testing...seems a little flaky using RingPlus and Google Voice at times.

you can tell because you talk over each other on accident all the time

pretty sure it's because when you make a call with gvoice you are calling their "server" or whatever and then it calls the person from your gvoice number. The audio passing through there slows it down a little somehow.

peeps mad because the dude sounds like he dgaf and kinda talks a little shit

scrolling is still lagging like on all android devices

google calls it silky, i call it pretty good

usually android cameras aren't impressive

buttons are ceramic, for whatever thats worth

it's actually comfortable to hold despite the massive screen

But its apparently super smooth, has good battery life, and has a shitload more free memory usually.

Ordered one, damned Sprint doesn't let you choose a mailing address separate from the billing. So it's going to my tiny apartment mailbox. It better be in light packaging so it fits. I usually send shit to work since the new apt doesn't have an on-site manager to accept packages. :blahclap:

I'm not really sure to be honest. Definitely be nice though, like it better than G2.

stonehenge
11-10-2013, 12:31 AM
I think its roughly the same size as the note2, maybe a bit thinner actually. :chin: I checked because I have held royarz Note2 and wanted to compare.

Depending on the price when our contract is up, I'm leaning towards the Note3 but instant updates and cheapness make the Nexus sexy. :chin: Even with my meh battery life, I love my GNex

Fuk u sprint. If I do the One Up deal thingy my contract will have to change and increase $30 mth plus the cost of the phone broken down.

Not doing that.

Upgrade not ready until June.....lame

I didn't ask if they would take my S3, an option. But I would like to keep and use it for development purposes and play with roms.

So.....may have to just buy the N5 outright from Google :partyparrot:
