stonehenge
08-29-2012, 04:44 PM
Those are the ones I tried to use and it FCs. Since yours was probably setup before the latest build I'm guessing either

1) the newest build is broked there
2) its because i dirty flashed jellybro over aokp :roflmao:

It lets me change the target and the new target works. Then it lets me tap the icon, choose System, and see the list but when I choose an icon from the list it FCs.

stonehenge
08-29-2012, 08:12 PM
The popup is clean and i like it but yeah, opening the app is kinda redundant and it also wakes up my screen (shows lockscreen) even though the "wake and unlock" option is off.

Things I miss from AOKP are brightness slider, torch toggle, and camera sound option.

But there's a brightness button toggle and camera sounds are easily fixed by renaming 2 files so idgaf.

Might have found a USB driver that'll work to let me hack around. Think I should try to figure out a root procedure? Any recommended reading for an experienced IT guy to learn how it's done? I figured I'd start by reading up on how it's done on other phones and try to get a feel for it...

Definitely gonna try out CNA, probably before I leave work.

theholycow

...ok I think I get it. Rooting is literally getting access as username root, done by blackhat-style hacking of the linux OS that runs on the back-end. I don't know fuck-all about that kind of shit.

What are talking about hiding the battery? Has option to put it in pulldown
When I put it in the pulldown, it is still on the statusbar. If I set it to "Hide" to remove it from the statusbar, it also hides it from the pulldown.

:word: and when you gain access to the user root, you install an app (supersu or superuser) that controls it. The app keeps track of anything that asks for root permission and you get a pop up where you can deny, allow, or allow and remember. You can also go into the app and revoke permissions. It works really well.

MBP is the only one with the S3. Me, FKK, Cam, and the Mikes have Galaxy Nexuses.

Those Commuter cases are pretty nice though, had one on my OG Droid. Rubber inside to cushion, hard plastic on the outside to protect. They cover buttons/ports and aren't TOO bulky compared to the bigger cases. Obviously heavier/bulkier than a TPU case but a nice middle ground.

theholycow

Yup, just bid $1 on eBay, there's ones for $11 BIN shipped, and there's ones specifically saying Android for $13.xx BIN shipped.

Folks with smartphones or even just any bluetooth-enabled computer (or a USB bluetooth adapter) could use these for more functionality at less cost than the usual basic $20 scanner I like for beginners.

I'd love to be able to pull ABS codes and other manufacturer-specific codes, and get manufacturer-specific live data like injector pulse width.

Interesting...

Virgin Mobile includes on the Venture "Mobile ID", which sounds like some kind of identification software but is actually a system for bundling apps, icons, wallpapers, supposedly ringtones (but I didn't notice), settings, etc. When you activate the phone, it downloads the "Essentials" Mobile ID pack and pesters you endlessly to install it, like some kind of polite rapist. I looked at it and was like "Oh great, bloatware...just what I need when I'm constantly battling to save memory space."

(Side note: Google tells me it's a Sprint thing and is on Sprint and Boost as well as Virgin.)

Well, when I finally pulled down my pants and bent over, I found out the polite rapist actually had my interests in mind. For one thing, I was able to uninstall every piece of it, reclaiming all the space it took, leaving only enough indication that it was installed for it not to pester me anymore.

However, after that I realized that it could do something I couldn't do without it. When I installed facebook from the Play store and moved it to the SD card, it still took 10 or 12MB internal memory. When Mobile ID installed it, more could be moved to the SD and it took only 2.2MB of internal memory! The whole Mobile ID pack took a mere 4 or 6MB (I don't remember now).

It also changed my wallpaper and deleted all the icons I had put on my home screens, placing its own icons on them instead. This annoyed me twice, since I had fixed up my home screen after installing it and uninstalling all the apps the first time, then it did it again when I reinstalled it so I could get facebook in 2.2MB.

The list of packs is here:
http://www.virginmobileusa.com/content/feature-detail/more-mobile-id.html
Unfortunately it doesn't list exactly what is in them.

Here's what I noticed (mostly by watching the items as they flashed under the progress bar) came with the Essentials pack:

Buzzfeed (Looked it up, apparently it's similar to Twatter)
facebook
Yelp
Tuning fork (Really is just a tuning fork app; it just plays a tone so you can compare your instrument/voice)
VMU icon pack
VM live widget
VM live
Downloads (not the same as Android built-in Downloads icon; this brings you to a badly organized VM website with terrible navigation so you can spend money buying their content)
Wikipedia
Home (no idea what it is)
wallpapers (including changing yours to one of these)
icons (and it deletes/moves icons on the home screens)
Twitter
Pandora (I already had this installed but now it takes less space. Win.)

stonehenge
09-07-2012, 01:54 PM
I could see how most of those could be considered a sampler of popular apps but WTF Tuning Fork :jester:

Cao, IDK what sizes they are but you may want to look into home alternatives (adw, launcher pro, go launcher). They replace your homescreen and allow you to customize it more. You can backup your launcher/icon settings to your sdcard, adjust the grid size, number of homescreens, icons on the bottom dock, etc.

I thought of it when you said it changed your homescreen setup but some of the other things might sound nice to you if the Venture came with the locked in "Phone" and "iD" shit in the dock.

IDK if this is AOSP behavior or if CM/AOKP are responsible but these few things annoy me about the music "widget" and lock slider:

1) Album art is too dark. With my phone on full brightness in the car, I can hardly see it. Needs moar bright.

2) Why the hell isn't my wallpaper still visible below the album art?

http://i.imgur.com/G4Anb.png

And I'm guessing this is AOKP only, can't remember if CM did it also:

3) Right when the slider is touched, 4 out of 5 icons are circled which looks half ass. Then add to it that the circles are different sizes and don't appear to be centered correctly. (with 5 targets, the GNow icon should be centered right?). Le pic:

---------- Post added at 09:12 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:08 AM ----------

That'll do cao, that'll do. Since that phone is mostly vanilla android with a few additions, you should be able to safely disable almost everything that is third party. On Motorola's and some other OEMs, they tie things into the OS that you wouldn't think should be. Like Yahoo stuff. On some Motos, if you disable Yahoo stuff, your phone won't boot. :roflnono:

Sounds like the sort of thing vMo would do. I'm pretty sure they make their money on content that they funnel you into buying, rather than on phones or signal...at least with cheap phones. The Rumor2 was extremely locked down, every potential hack loophole was closed, etc. I'm surprised that they let the Venture out the door with vulnerabilities.

stonehenge
09-10-2012, 05:25 PM
Every phone comes out with vulnerabilities for root, it just takes them time to find the hole. :cheeky:

The yahoo-like stuff wasn't to lock you down though, it's because Moto integrates social shit into everything and intertwines everything together. So you disable something that sounds useless and it ends up being used somewhere vital.

Note II looks sexy but huge (roughly the same size as first Note)

Should be a little slimmer since it's the correct aspect ratio.

stonehenge

yeah it is a touch narrower but the screen is larger to it isn't smaller in any other direction lol

I deleted a bunch of stuffs from DB folder, hopefully if you needed what it was you had already grabbed it. Added a few new peeps so didn't want a bunch of useless shit in there to have to download.

I think I broke my phone using SystemCleanup (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.SystemCleanup.Inteks.org&feature=search_result) to move Play/Maps/etc to /system from /data. It's horribly slow and unstable, rebooting when I try to do stuff.

---------- Post added at 01:33 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:14 PM ----------

Maybe not...looks like I just needed to wait a few minutes after booting before trying to run SystemCleanup, probably had to wait until SD card was fully recognized.

Guess I should test stuff like that on my devel phone first, though. :jester:

If I can move my dalvik cache then space will never be an issue again.

SystemCleanup seems very powerful...

Among other things, it can freeze apps (presumably just like Titanium Backup Pro, except SystemCleanup is free).

Cao, you should probably move those apps to the SD card instead of to the system partition. If it's anything like the Fassy the system and data partitions may reside on different chips with dramatically different write performance.

As I understand you can't move Play or Maps to SD without breaking the OS. Not worried about write performance for those apps...and nothing's slower than this SD card anyway.

now if you had a phone with a recovery and devs making roms for it, you'd have even more time sucked up

but its fun

Just got recovery off the Venture. :cheeky:

No, just pulled stock recovery. Dude slapped together a custom recovery to test with, working on flashing that now.

---------- Post added at 06:38 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:33 PM ----------

Well, that didn't work...booted up to a backlit but totally black screen, Windows prompted me to install the ADB driver again, but there's no ADB device to connect to now.

it does that when you try to boot to recovery or it does that no matter how you boot it? :uhoh:

:wtf:

Fail only when boot recovery...booted normally just fine.

I have 3 Ventures...my live one, and two spares for when they get crushed in my pocket (together they cost less than any other model, still). One is for devel, the other will remain sealed in box for now. It'd be a bummer to brick my devel phone but I'd still have hardware for when the live one breaks, assuming the motherboard is undamaged.

Second try works. I have CWM-based recovery v6.0.1.2 now.

Assuming it backs up and restores normally, the only way you can screw up that phone now is if you screw the bootloader up or something. Messing up the rom is fine because you can always restore a backup.

The only way I know to boot into the recovery image is issuing the appropriate reboot command while it's running well enough for ADB. If you mess up a ROM to the point that ADB can't run commands, how do you boot into recovery?

---------- Post added at 10:48 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:16 PM ----------

Got it...hold Home button, press power button, keep holding Home button until recovery menu shows up.
