This one sounds pretty promising. Even says it has a 2.1 launcher with fixed landscape :whoa: and working live wallpapers, Farenheit on the deskclock, etc.

Only downside is that 2.0.1 and 2.1 ROMs aren't compatible with each other so I'd have to do a complete wipe and reinstall everything. Can't keep /data on this one. :think:

Theme, Wifi Tether, Screenshots, Overclocking, Cache Clearing, other small tweaks to the OS that you don't necessarily see but make it run a little more efficient.

If you don't find use for any of it, you can always go back to stock.

:word: Did you install that blapkmarket app Jay? If so, look in there for "i music tao" like Eddeh said. It lets you search and download songs directly. It would actually be faster than tethering and you could just connect your phone by USB to get it to your computer. Good stuff.

Some Internal conflict within the Sholes Team is going on.. Here's a quote from Sholes.info from earlier today..

"Friends, I write this with in anger and with a heavy heart. There are things going on around here that make my stomach churn. For past several weeks all of you have been enjoying a fantastic mobile experience thanks to the efforts of many developers, researchers, and even an artist. Many of you have donated what you can by buying the smupdater application on Android Market. Unfortunately, I am sad to tell you that not one ROM developer has seen anything from these donations. The gentleman that wrote the application (this is his only contribution for the record) has refused to distribute the funds to appropriate points of spending. For example, trevorj bricked his Droid for all of you, he had to get his phone replaced on his own, no money was put forward for this to be done in a more appropriate way. Other developers and especially the researchers have bricked their phones. Again, none of them were supported with funds from smupdater to this date.
The developer insists he does not want the money released under his name for tax reasons and wants for form a company first. However in one fight he essentially said so long, thanks for all of the money, this he later stated was in jest. For some time many of the developers have questioned his intentions. My personal opinion (and it is just an opinion, I state for legal reasons) is that he is playing everyone for fools. From what I have been told he is contacting a lawyer regarding these issues and someone seemms to have advised him that if he cashes out before two weeks from today, he cannot be sued.
It was never our intention to profit from this research, merely to have fun and do something exciting. This has gone too far in my opinion, if I were a paying user of smupdater, I would ask for a refund before it is too late.
Just my two cents.
This post has been carefully written for legal reasons, I do not need to be sued. Take from this what ever you like, but this is all just my opinion. For security reasons, editing will temporarily be disabled."

As a result, the SMUpdater app has been pulled from the market until further notice. Mostly due to negative comments and rumors. Wish them the best.

Good news comes from this though. The team who actually do all the work on the ROM are still good with each other and have renamed themselves DroidMod and will release SMUpdater as DMUpdater in the market and it will be free this time :D So now we can install from the market and always get updated when a new one comes out :humping:

You'll have to register on alldroid.org since the downloads are attachments there, but no biggie :imo.

Go to http://alldroid.org/viewtopic.php?f=314&t=2566 and download the second file (AUTOMATIC). Put that file on your SD card.

Reboot while holding X to go into recovery. Now you can make an Advanced Nandroid Backup if you want (I did) but the Live-Wallpaper installer will do it anyway lol. After you made a backup (if you chose to), go to Install and then Choose ROM from SD card. Pick the Live-Wallpapers file. It will automatically do a Nandroid backup of your current setup, so shit can't hit the fan and then it will install the Live-Wallpaper goodies.

When it is done, press the power button a couple times and choose to reboot your phone.

Now you can press Menu > Wallpaper and choose Live Wallpapers :pepper:

If you want to be able to interact with them (some do things when you tap them, drag icons, etc) then you'll need to use the 2.1 Launcher. So its up to you. They will show up just fine in 2.0.1 Home but you can't interact with them.

After flashing, anybody else's battery life seem reduced?

I haven't had any issues with battery life and I'm overclocked even. The only issue I've ever had with battery is when my GPS gets stuck ON for some reason (little satellite dish is always in the taskbar). Thats why I keep the Power Control widget on one screen so I can kill it when I'm not using it. But this happened occasionally before rooting/flashing also.

DMUpdater is in the market now and DroidMod v1.0.0 is out :hmm: supposedly it is pretty much v.2.0.7 of Sholes. It has a new boot animation, live wallpapers built-in, and comes without a theme. It is apparently better to add a theme afterward with MetaMorph. May try it later :secret:

Also apparently includes some sort of "wipe data while keeping all apps" setting which sounds interesting :hmm:

I have not really noticed any benefit of running a ROM so far, having it rooted is cool though.
I'm not overclocking it at all, and keep getting force close messages on random stuff. It never did that in factory mode.

So question being, if I put it back to stock, rooted it, and then installed some kind of theme (like smoked glass), wouldn't it basically be the same as right now since I'm not overclocking it?

If I do overclock it, how much do I need to do to be on the safe side?

Yeah if you aren't using the benefits of a flashed rom, you can go back to stock with root and then add a theme. Nothing wrong with that if you prefer the way stock behaves for you.

As for overclocking, I was running 800 for a long time, Eddie was running 1ghz and neither of us have had issues. People are even running 1.3 and shit which sounds crazy to me. But even those people don't report any damage to hardware. The only issues that I've seen with really high amounts are crashes and reboots but the hardware seems to be fine. Of course they haven't been at it for long, it may reduce life. :shrug:

Well essentially by rooting you can modify a stock install to do anything that a ROM has. Well for the most part. You can take a stock installation and add an overclock kernal, install a theme, enable wifi tethering, etc. The benefit of a ROM is that it all comes in one package. You don't have to manually enable/install/remove/tweak everything, the ROM builder does that for you.

For example, to enable tethering on a stock install requires a bunch of commands and modifying, this is already done in a ROM. Then to get multi-touch browser and the new gallery and whatnot, you'd have to download and install/modify stuff to make them work. Etc etc.

Many ROMs also tweak system settings and the way that android handles memory or cpu speeds. Like some roms repackage all the stock apps (including Home) so that they run more efficiently.

So all these little things are all packed into one quick flash.

But lots of people choose to stay stock because they like it better :shrug:

Plus, if you DO have issues, just restore the backup you make before installing and they'll be gone. Or leave them installed but use a normal wallpaper and they won't be running to kill batt :shrug:

- New boot anim (DroidMod animation)
- 2.1 Live Wallpapers v1.1
- DMUpdater included
- Wipe data but keep apps option
- Themes have been removed, just use MetaMorph.

:shrug: I actually want to try it because wiping data occasionally isn't a bad idea, especially after all the experimenting I've done with this thing :rofl2:. I haven't wiped it yet because I don't want to lose all my apps but this appears to keep them :D I'll try it this weekend maybe or some day after work this week.

Only downside is that its themeless. Which means its faster actually. But uglier. lol

It is an app you download free from the market and it will apply themes that you download. I actually applied a blue-accented theme OVER my Sholes install using Metamorph.

Metamorph themes are completely different than OpenHome, aHome, GDE, etc themes from the market. You download MM themes in the form of Zip files. Then you open the zip file with MM and it extracts it and then lets you install part or all of it.

I highly recommend doing a Nandroid backup before applying any themes, because if you don't like it, I don't think there is an "uninstall" lol

Boot holding X, go to backup/restore and do an Advanced Nandroid Backup. Change the name before you perform the backup so that you'll be able to find it later. Name it "Feb23BeforeTheme" or something.

My DM1.0 is acting dumb. I chose "wipe but keep apps" and some are missing. Some of the kept apps (actually I think all) lost their settings and whatnot. But its so fast! lol

I'm gonna restore my Sholes and copy down what apps I have, then back up the ones that I need to save settings from (there are apps in the market to backup your apps). Then I'll do a completely fresh DM1.0 install, install the apps I actually use, and install a theme. Should be a lot cleaner/faster than my current hacked up install :roflmao:

Well if you want to do a COMPLETE wipe you could do a factory reset then re-root, reflash the recovery, etc but fuck that noise, too much work :rofl2:

Just choose to wipe /data when you flash the ROM. All the other partitions already get wiped with a flash so /data is the only one left. This of course deletes all your apps and settings and shit so you'll be starting completely fresh.

I think I know the issue. DroidMod has a little change in its files that makes the market think it is 2.1 (so you can download Live Wallpapers and Google Earth and whatnot). Maybe that theme is reading that and thinking you have 2.1.

Well I read up on this last week sometime and at that point he was pissed off. He created this for everyone and the forum he released it on were just talking shit. "It takes to long to refresh." "It just sits there after you click an app and you have to wait" etc. They went gmfs on him so he was like FYGT and stopped working on it. Then a few days or week later he said that he was still working on it with his friend and would release updates occasionally on blapk.com but wasn't going to keep the forum updated.

NOW the latest I hear is that he was told to take it down for legal reasons. Not sure if its true, if it was a C&D, lawsuits, etc. Dunno :shrug:

It took forever to refresh but eventually it finished and the list is LONG. Only downside is many of them are named weird. Like one just says "Now" and it ended up being "Monopoly: Here and Now". But there really are shitloads of apps on it. So open :secret: and hit menu > manage repo. Uncheck the blapk ones and then press menu > new repo and put "http://apkrepo.co.tv" then go back and refresh the list. It takes fuckin forever.

Also, apparently that repo is put up by this site: http://www.androidapps.co.tv/

So you can browse the apps there from teh pc or android browzer.

For you Droid fawks:

There was a new version of Android leaked that is supposedly the version we would get whenever Verizon releases the next update. It is a version of 2.1 that was actually made for the Droid. All previous 2.1 ROMs were made using shit ported over from the Nexus, which worked but wasn't 100%.

So far, everyone who has tried the new roms based off of this new leak (called ERE25) has reported that they are fast as fuck and VERY stable. Many have reported no FCs and whatnot. Live wallpapers are also supported natively instead of with hacks, Pinch zoom apparently works better, the browser is faster, etc.

Only downside to upgrading is that you HAVE to wipe all your data and start fresh, you can't just upgrade and keep all your apps. I think I'm going to do this, everyone is saying their phones run a LOT better with it...

2) Download the ROM, put it on your sdcard.
3) Flash ROM
4) Start over like you just got the phone.
5) ???
6) Profit.

I recommend going to either AllDroid.org or droidforums.net and finding a ROM that sounds good to you. I'm using Ultimate Droid 6.5. Make sure you get an ESE53 one, that is the latest. ERE25 is older already.

Okay, go to http://google.com/contacts and shek it out. What "groups" do you have on the left?

I have "My Contacts", some smaller Fam, Friends, Work, etc ones and at the bottom, All Contacts.

Right now all my actual contacts that I want on my phone are in My Contacts.

If you set it up that way, you can then go into your phone contacts, press Menu > Display options, click your gmail address, and then only check off My Contacts.

GMail will still save all the addresses but they will be saved to All Contacts and won't appear on your phone :shake:

Okay, go to http://google.com/contacts and shek it out. What "groups" do you have on the left?

I have "My Contacts", some smaller Fam, Friends, Work, etc ones and at the bottom, All Contacts.

Right now all my actual contacts that I want on my phone are in My Contacts.

If you set it up that way, you can then go into your phone contacts, press Menu > Display options, click your gmail address, and then only check off My Contacts.

GMail will still save all the addresses but they will be saved to All Contacts and won't appear on your phone :shake:


I haz peeps under Friends and some under Familia...at bottom I have All contact and then Most Contacted.

I went to Menu > Display options, goog and then just chose friends, familia and starred in Android....

The official 2.1 update will apparently start rolling out tomorrow. The version number for that update is ESE53, which is what my current ROM is based on so I'm not missing anything lol.

I've had some major issues this weekend with my phone. I'm running Ultimate Droid (ese53 or whatever) and its seemed REALLY REALLY slow and laggy. Then Saturday when someone called me, it got hung up playing the ringtone and totally locked up. I pulled the battery and powered it back on and it got hung up in a boot rotation. It would get tot he red eye screen, then reboot and did this like 5 times until it just finally booted normally. Then it was fine. Last night it did the same exact same thing. I'm thinking of factory wiping it and putting it back to the way it was before I ever flashed it if it's going to be this unstable.

Jay, you can try a different ROM before resorting to stock. Up to you. I've been using Simply Stunning and I haven't had any issues with it. It's up to you though :shrug:

Yeah I had UD 6.5 for a while, haven't tried the newer ones. I don't remember why I switched to SS but I had a reason :think:

SS doesn't have as much crap bundled with it like UD does.

BUT SS 2.0.3. had some sort of maps issue, the guy who made SS sent me his latest build which fixed it but I don't know if he released it yet...

I'm really not even sure why I'm running these ROMs. I dont overclock or anything so its basically worthless to me it seems :rofl2:

I like having it rooted though. Some of the stuff the roms do is neat but I just don't think I'm using the phone to its full advantage really. All I do is txt, phone, and facebook/browser.

I like having mine themed, like how fast it is overclocked, use a few root-requiring apps like cachemate and screenshot apps, etc.

But on a regular basis, the overclocking and theme is the only thing I see/use all the time.

Yup same here.
I've never tried overclocking it. I'm actually kind of scared to. My luck it would burst into flames or something.
As far as it being rooted, I mean hell. I can leave it rooted using the factory ROM right? I like the DroidMod, but it FC'd a couple times when I was in the middle of something important.

Yeah you can root and stop after that if you want, you don't HAVE to install a rom. I think you could even install a new kernel into the stock if you wanted to overclock it.

I haven't heard any reports of people having issues after overclocking. Many are running them up to like 1.3ghz and shit :uhoh:

If you put it up around 1ghz though you can definitely notice a difference in speed IMO
