What are the chances of me bricking my phone if I decide to root it? What are the major benefits of rooting? How hard it rooting?

Sure, I could read through this thread, but face it, I'm injun.

just rooting isn't very hard and has little to no chance of bricking

but rom flashing can get scary sometimes on a DX

luckily SBF files save the day, if they've released one for the latest DX OTA

Keeler

What the difference between rooting and rom flashing?

chevyrado14

you have to root to flash a rom. root is like admin access to the phone. a rom is the operating system.

yeah before 4.0 you couldn't take screenshots stock except for a few phones. My wifes stratosphere has stock screenshots that Sammy added in.

Ok, so disabling the "safe headset volume" or whatever stopped it from adjusting my media & alarm volumes when headphones are plugged in. But it still throws my phone into vibrate whenever I plug headphones in. Even if I turn it all back up after plugging in the headphones, when I unplug them it puts it to vibrate again. WTF

I guess I'll flash the next AOSKP and hope it was a bug they fixed. I'm on a build from a while ago.

im still on jellybro and it doesn't do that. :imo im thinkin about trying aokp again but im liking cm10 too much.

CM10 and AOKP are still pretty similar. Besides this bug (which may be fixed by now) I like AOKP better, but I don't know why :roflshrug:

i just want to know how nice JB MIUI is. ICS version felt a little sluggish to me. Hayz says this one is fast though so dfw to try it. Might flash it, play around, then restore my AOKP nandroid :jester:

Hopefully you don't want to take screenshots, use wifi tethering, block ads, remove bloat, or anything else that requires root because according to the two threads here (http://androidforums.com/venture-all-things-root/), it hasn't been rooted yet. :emo:

theholycow
08-22-2012, 03:04 PM
Yeah, I saw that it hasn't been rooted. I wasn't expecting wifi tethering and I hadn't considered ads. I read that you can uninstall most of the bloatware without rooting.

I had no idea that screenshots require rooting, that's nuts.

stonehenge
08-22-2012, 03:17 PM
Well version 4.0 and up don't require root anymore since Google added it into stock Android but with the exception a few Samsungs, pre-4.0 needs root for screenshots. :(

Adblocking is really only needed if you find yourself doing a lot of browsing, I never block them.

theholycow
08-22-2012, 04:03 PM
It should do all of that except for maybe tethering. I say maybe because I found these:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.diyphonegadgets.wifihotspot
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.tether

First one is free but has mixed reviews, second one is by a known developer, has good reviews, but is only a 14 day trial, then its $5.

Hey, neat. I didn't really think there was even a slight chance of wifi hotspot. I'd pay $5 for that. Android apps belong to my account, not my phone, right? So if the phone dies as I expect, I can replace it and keep my apps?

I saw some free no-root screenshot apps that might work.

chevyrado14
08-22-2012, 04:05 PM
correct apps stay with your account and newer versions of android will automagically install them on your new phone.

stonehenge
08-22-2012, 04:18 PM
Yeah and you can also install them on multiple devices if you sign into more than one (a phone and a tablet, an old phone to use as a media player, etc).

I've used a few of the free screenshot apps before, you may have to try a few before you get one that works, it seems like they all work on different phones. There are some with notification buttons, some that you shake to take the pic, some with a floating button that you tap, etc.

theholycow
08-22-2012, 04:31 PM
Damn. This is pretty neato. I was afraid that once I went smartphone I wouldn't be able to go back, and playing with this on wifi alone already makes me think that might be the case.

One thing I expected with this phone and it's (so far) not failing to disappoint: Typing sucks. The on-screen keyboard is slightly better than the hard keyboard but I'm very slow at both vs. how fast I am on the Rumor2's spacious keyboard (twice the width of the hard keyboard on the Venture).

---------- Post added at 11:31 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:29 AM ----------

Any way to type notes on my computer and have them show up on my phone? Preferably, something built-in to Google. It prompted me about backing up shit when I signed my phone in, so I hope it integrates with my phone's built-in notes app and lets me have access from the computer.

i need some help from Mike. Im trying to swap out a couple pngs in a themed mms. Do i need to sign the apk after i do that. Ive tried it with and without signing and i cannot get it to install at all.

stonehenge
08-22-2012, 04:39 PM
Cao,

If your phone has a built-in notes app then thats something that VM or the OEM added because Google doesn't have a notes app. I use evernote for that. It obviously isn't a Google product but you can get to your notes from a browser, from an app (Android or iOS) or from an installed program (Windows, Mac). I use it A LOT. You can also encrypt notes that have important infos so that they'd need your evernote password and the password you assigned to that note.

Other than that, you may be able to use Google Tasks or something but I haven't messed with it, it may not be what you're looking for. Maybe even Google Drive somehow but it would be clunky because you'd be editing a file and uploading it to Drive.

---------- Post added at 08:39 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:37 AM ----------

Oh and as for the keyboard, I can see how that one would be a pain. You should get used to it either way but in the future if you upgrade you should probably try to either get one with a full slide out qwerty (which there aren't many choices of) or just a larger screened phone. Typing on a big screen is easy. 4"+ imo

Cow app? Win.

My wife has an HTC Wildfire whose screen isn't much bigger than the Venture but the on screen keyboard is pretty decent. Either way, like you said, I'll probably get used to what I have.

stonehenge
08-22-2012, 04:49 PM
I think the only thing about that phone that will piss you off (assuming you don't mind that it isn't super fast or high res) is the battery. After reading some random forum posts, people say it dies fairly quick and is misleading. They'll plug it in at 15% and a few minutes later it will say 50% and then a while later 100% so they unplug it and it dies in a couple hours.

So I guess you'll want to leave it plugged in when in your office or chillin at home since it doesn't sound like the battery indicator is very trustworthy. :blah:

That sounds like something they could update.

theholycow
08-22-2012, 05:01 PM
Yeah, I read that too. Some users do ok, some drain it fast. People seem to have success with battery saver apps. I'll try to be conscious of battery usage...so far I decided against a live wallpaper and turned off haptic feedback. I'll certainly quit apps that don't need to be running in the background and check for processes that are running. I might invest in an upgraded battery if one exists and I'm not happy...at least a battery will survive the death of the phone.

Oh then yeah you definitely want a protector. Plastic will scratch like a motherfucker. The higher end phones with the gorilla glass are resistant to most scratches (including keys) and are pretty durable. At least the plastic will flex a little if you're as hard on your phones as you've described lol

WTF Google Play. I can connect to it with the phone and download apps. I can open it in a web browser on a computer and see the apps that I downloaded in "MY ANDROID APPS". However, I cannot install an app to my phone from the computer's web browser. It says "You don't have any devices." Worse, I cannot find that cow app from the phone...

:wtf: did you try logging out/in to the browser version?

---------- Post added at 11:51 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:47 AM ----------

You could also try clearing data for the market and I've read places that Google Talk is somehow tied into Google Play so you could log into Talk and that might register the phone on your account.

stonehenge

Google talk works great if you have others who use it. I use it to chat with my wife throughout the day. It's pretty good about being logged in on the phone and computer at the same time too, usually stops sending messages to the computer once you open it on the phone and vice versa.

stonehenge

the program for windows is that big!? :whoa:

The app is <8mb, I rarly need it at home so I haven't installed it on Windows. I just use my phone and the program on my Mac which I installed a long time ago.

IDK why its so big, its just a dual pane window with a ribbon at the top O_o

chevyrado14

i even tried decompiling and doing the swaps and recompiling that didnt work either i was using apk-multi tool

stonehenge
08-22-2012, 08:24 PM

theholycow

Come to think of it I probably could just use the web interface instead of installing that Windows bloatware. Fucking thing better give blowjobs for being a 50MB notes application.

stonehenge
08-22-2012, 08:28 PM
yeah idk why it needs to be that big.. it doesn't even have a flashy UI or anything...

I'm pretty sure it can play movies/audio and whatnot if you put something like that in one of your notes but that shouldn't require 50mb either. Maybe it comes with a 40mb video showing you how to use it :roflmao:

MikeH

theholycow
08-22-2012, 08:38 PM
Used Evernote to get URL of cao program to my phone, sumbitch says "Your device isn't compatible with this version". :mexiblah:

Also, Evernote in Windows will take some getting used to. Besides the general eye-candyness of the UI, there's too much UI and not enough content-centricity. I couldn't immediately figure out how to type stuff in a note, how to create a note, etc. I've collapsed the two non-content panes as far as I could but they still eat at least 30% of the screen. This shit is too mash.

Then there's the idiocy that apps on the card still use some internal memory too...so you move a 12MB app to the card and it still uses anywhere from 2 to 10MB of internal memory.

Ah well, I shouldn't get too worked up over this shit, it was $23 and I'm only looking to improve over the Rumor2.

the service here seems to be shitty lately. But from what I've read, when they start doing LTE testing, the 3g service seems to decline some. They aren't testing it in my area, but all around me is. Columbus has it, and they are testing it in Albany. Haven't deployed it yet.

MikeH

if you are in a weak LTE area and dont turn it off it will try and switch constantly, making it worse.

What does the Google Voice Android App do that the service doesn't do without the app installed? I assumed that it gives me VoIP WiFi calling (as does gmail on the computer), but in fact it does not. (Talkatone, GrooveIP/GrooveIP Lite, or SipDroid do that.)

For location based setting changes you can try llama.

As for LTE making a difference, Lte is much faster than 3g but is a battery hog.

When you say backup do you mean just from rom to rom or to sdcard for archiving them?

Well most people get used to having a smartphone. When I say that I mean, if you're going to lay down under a car, you take it out and set it aside instead of leaving it in your pocket. Not because it WILL get crushed but because it could.

FKK has destroyed enough to prove he isn't getting used to it :roflmao: we'll see what happens to the Venture :chuy:

theholycow
08-23-2012, 09:21 PM
Here's my thing: When I lay down under the car, that's when I really want it there with me...it might save my life if the shit hits the fan. Same for other situations where it could get fucked up. I'll have to try to keep it within reach but out of harm's way, maybe, but then I'll be constantly grabbing it and moving it around and shit. I break my "no holster" rule when working on cars since I wear shitty gym shorts without pockets, so at least I can hook/unhook it, but that's annoying too...

What would really be cool would be a tough flip phone that does hotspot duty and a tablet.

I keep mine nearby when under a vehicular, not only for the 911 reason but also because I may want to take a pic for future reference or use it to look something up or whatever. I usually set it just far enough away that I won't fuck it up but I can still get to it easily to answer it or use it.

Since the Venture isn't a popular model, this isn't an option but there are cases that turn phones into beasts. Otterbox makes the best ones I believe. They are bulky as hell but protect from drops, liquids, things hitting them, etc. That could be an option if you ever do want to move to a more expensive phone.

theholycow
08-23-2012, 09:25 PM
No can do bulky...this thing's already too damned big, and it's small by smartphone standards.

stonehenge
08-23-2012, 09:29 PM

theholycow

I hate Verizon. They're probably better now but way back in ancient history they tricked you into extra services and then raped you on the bill. I never fell for it but I was always nervous. Anyway I'm so happy with no-contract prepaid service that I don't think I want to go back to traditional shizzy.

stonehenge
08-23-2012, 09:34 PM
I don't blame you, just meant that those Casios sound like your kinda phone.

VZW has never tricked me into anything but they definitely rape you on the bill. They also have the best coverage out of all the carriers. But theres still the raep.

theholycow

I know Verizon Wireless has that reputation for the best coverage but my experience differs. When I left them in 2006 or 2007, they had 1 bar or no signal for most of western RI, while Sprint had very strong signal everywhere I went.

Based on that, I also learned that long-pressing Find brings me the voice command function, so now I can knock the search/voice command widget right off my screen. That's also cool because I don't have to look at it to have it transcribe voice notes while I drive. This is a holy grail for me. I currently keep a mini-clipboard/bunch of notepaper/pen in the car...then again, a cop might think I'm on a phone call whereas there's no law against scribbling notes on paper.

Virgin Mobile's systems are fucked up today...figures they'd get all fucked up on the day I change phones and pay my bill.

When I did the phone change this morning online it gave me an error and I had to call about it. They said in 3 hours I could try again; 90 minutes later I got an email saying it was done.

Then I tried to pay my bill. I buy a "top-up" card at Walmart and feed its number into the system to put money in my account. That didn't work so I figured I'd just take care of it tonight. Get home and try it at 9:40pm, still an error. Call and wait on hold for 10 minutes listening to ghetto music; speak to Hajii's wife whose fake American name I fail to get. She says it's all set and not to worry about the online system still showing no payment, my payment has been credited. Ok...hope I don't lose my grandfathered $25 rate from that fuck-up after being so careful to keep it with my new phone!

How did the Galaxy Tab escape design patent infringement? This was the only device to be preliminarily enjoined (on appeal no less), and yet it was the one of the few devices to be spared the sledgehammer. And, by the way, it looks an awful lot like an iPad. Yet the Epic 4G, a phone I own (uh oh, Apple's coming after me)—which has a slide out keyboard, a curved top and bottom, 4 buttons on the bottom, the word Samsung printed across the top, buttons in different places (and I know this because I look in all the wrong places on my wife's iTouch), a differently shaped speaker, a differently placed camera, etc.—that device infringes the iPhone design patents....

damn jury :fp:

and this is why they said the Epic infringed I bet, because it doesn't have a bezel :retard:

Like the trade dress, once you determine Samsung violated the trade dress, the flatscreen with the Bezel...then you go down the products to see if it had a bezel. But we took our time. We didn't rush. We had a debate before we made a decision. Sometimes it was getting heated.

I actually like Twitter for its simplicity so I'll give App.net a try since I have a feeling most Android peeps (the main reason I use twitter) will go that direction.

I posted the link because the app is called Hooha :jester:

Any suggestions for a silent ringtone for known telemarketer numbers? Is there a free one I should download, or should I just make a blank mp3?

Or, is there a way to make it automatically ignore calls from that number?

On my phone when I go to set a ringtone, you can choose "silent" or maybe that's just for notifications :chin: brb

Got a silent ringtone from Myxer. While assigning it to contacts I found an option to send calls directly to voicemail.

Found a silent ringtone already in the phone...stupid name, though. It was one of four nearly identical named ringtones, one being a really bad low-bitrate recording of something, one silent, and the other two being low-bitrate godawful rap crap. I'll keep the one I downloaded that's actually called "silent".

After posting that, I was putting Hey Hey What Can I Do on my MicroSD and I realized something: It wasn't Alcatel, PCD, or VMo who put that there. The MicroSD card was previously from somebody else's phone (unclaimed lost & found) and I never formatted the card, I just slapped it in figuring maybe I'd find something useful on it.

Apple should have watched "When keepin' it real goes wrong".

From the article:
If this comes to trial, Apple will have its hands full, and might even be forced to rely on Microsoft for backup.
Eh? Microsoft would help them because common enemy? Otherwise, Microsoft and Apple aren't friends AFAIK, hence why their shit doesn't play well together even though there's no reason the technology would be difficult to bring to market.

I think Apple/Microsoft may have either licensing deals with each other or an agreement of sorts that let them use each others patents. I read about it somewhere but I forget. :|

Yeah it has nothing to do with the process taking too long (I dirty flash, idgaf), I'm just too lazy to wait for it to download and copy it to my phone.

from radio thread:

my signal got slightly worse, dbm-103 vs dbm-100

 zomg 3 dbm difference, he was probably just 2" to the right
