Hey Tucson... We just switched from Verizon to t-mobile and they've had awesome service, great features, good phones, etc... But the network seems terrible. I've been getting 1 or 2 bars tops and we get a lot of static and dropped calls.
Is this just me or my phone? Or is it a broader problem? I'm still within my two weeks where I could walk away. We have new S4s.
All of my friends who have had it here have said they have had similar issues that you are seeing, OP.

It might be your location. I've lived near St Mary's Hospital, near 4th Ave, and worked at the UofA tech park, the main campus, and near the airport. It's always 4 or 5 bars if outside or near a window. The data is usually 4G, these days.
I've got T-Mobile in Tucson. No problems most of the time.
What part of town are you in? I've never had an issue with them (although I only have a text plan) on campus or anywhere around it, but I haven't been much further than that.

The rear/sides look nice and I like the idea of a almost AOSP Motorola. It's too bad that the specs aren't the best. Will probably be a nice phone but if I'm going to use an upgrade or new line then I want to get my $$ worth. Unless its cheap off-contract then :chin:

i even have my aux and micro usb cables zip tied to keep them together. but the S4/Note/One/N4/MotoX/etc are all on opposite ends :nono:

I don't understand why they do it either. It makes sense to pull the phone out of your pocket with the headphone jack on the bottom, it makes sense to have power/audio on the same side for docking, using while charged, etc.

Oh hai. I'd approach 4.3 with a little caution. I flashed the factory images last night and like lots of people say, the N4 is a little "choppy" now. Not sure if it's really 4.3 or what is basically a new kernel causing it. Opening up the MMS or Dialer for example is a lot less "smooth" than before but not necessarily slow. No other real issues though. Can't tell any difference in user experience sans choppy animations.

I think I'm going to scoot back to 4.2.2. Root still doesn't work quite right on 4.3 and the N4 is being buggy with the new software. Lots of screen flashing errors and choppiness.

So here's the clusterfuck that is the Nexus 4 4.3 update. Google sent out an OTA and posted factory images for a build called JWR66N. This build has numerous bugs. When they updated AOSP, it was updated with a build called JSS15J which is due to be sent out with the new N7. JSS15J also has quite a few GPU and other SOC driver updates specifically for the N4. What's happening now is that any kernels complied from AOSP will not work on the N4, since it's been updated since Google posted factory images for the N4. The hope is Google will send an update to get the N4 up to JSS15J which should alleviate any problems related to apps or whathaveyou since it's running on a buggy and now outdated build.

After working out a few small kinks (flashing SuperSU and removing koush's Superuser, setting root to apps and adb, and removing a couple duplicate apps) CM10.2 feels pretty nice. Got all my apps/data restored and no issues that I can see so far.

Focal is nice. So far the only issues I have seen are that the HDR sucks (but that's probably a GNex hardware issue), the "automatic" magic wand setting makes Focal FC when taking pics (not a big deal, just leave it off), and their quick-gallery thing is a little screwy (kinda buggy, easy to delete pics on accident).

Overall I like it, I'll keep using it, I just won't use HDR, auto pimp, or the built in gallery thing.

I'm glad you posted. I was going to look for a keyboard today and I totally forgot about that one. What I'd really like is a keyboard just like the stock one, except with slide gestures for numbers and symbols near their position on a regular keyboard. Like 'W' would have slide gestures for 2 and @. Not sure what would have to be done about some of the corner keys with too much adjacent stuff.

there is a really nice SSH client called Juice that has a little "drawer" that pops up above whatever keyboard you are using and has the arrows, tab, ctrl, etc. I tried it on my phone and it's bamf but it requires 4.0+ :blahclap:

I use ssh, but almost never mobile...I rarely do much admin work mobile, mostly desktop. I do use ssh on the iPad sometimes, and that fucker's keyboard has enough screen space to be close enough to full-size that I can type on it as fast as touch-typing on a real keyboard. I feel like Data on Star Trek The Next Generation as my fingers fly across a virtual keyboard and make surprisingly satisfying thunk sounds as they hit the screen.

Not yet, due to kernel issues. JWR factory images are missing GPU driver updates, and JSS AOSP builds have problems with screen tearing and random freezes when typing. The response from JBQ about the factory image screwup was quite literally "sorry about that."

Flashed my NST back to pre-root backup. Now installing 1.2 update and burning NookManager to MicroSD. Looks like it'll fit that unused 64MB card and waste the 2GB but everybody says to use a big card, not sure why, so I'm using the 2GB...I'll erase it as necessary. In a few more minutes I will root with NookMangler.

Copy the keyboard apk to /system/app and use nook color tools app to enable it.

I think the nook color tools app also let's you access Android settings that are hidden in the Nooks default UI

Need simple, good portrait/landscape toggle program. Want it in status bar or at least notification area, and want to assign it to one of my hardware buttons.

All the big players are in bed with the government, whether by choice or by force. Google is certainly no worse than anybody else. The offensive part is that the others never promised or implied that they wouldn't do that sort of thing, whereas Google's motto is (was?) "do no evil" and they seemed to be about the users and about transparency...

I've reduced my usage of Google products somewhat, but I can't imagine operating completely without any products (or similar ones from competitors).

Do you have a red light when you plug it in? Happened to me. You can take it apart and disconnect/reconnect the battery or leave it on the charger overnight and maybe it'll come back. It's something to do with 4.2.2+ reporting the battery voltage incorrectly and Google refuses to fix it. Personally I'd RMA it if you have a spare.

so get new phones 4mo early and have a good network but pay more vs wait it out and save money with potentially bad network :chin:

Meh, I think I'm gonna go TMo. Cheaper phones, cheaper plans, and I rarely leave town. Plus lately Verizon's signal has been dick at parents, nanas, and even at work. I had to go outside just now to talk to my wife (no bars).

The GNex isn't the best tool to measure signal strength but still, TMo can't be worse than this in town. If it is, we switch back in a couple years or whenever we pay off our phones.

Everyone I talk to that actually has TMo here says they don't ha e any problems besides in the mall or basements of old as shit buildings lol

4.3 for the N4 and N7 just keeps getting crazier. Turns out the N7 has the same freezing issues as the N4 on JSS builds and no one has figured out why. CM10.2 is unusable since it uses the latest AOSP and the Paranoid Android guys actually reverted back to the old JWR branch to get a working build out. Basically what happens is the UI will freeze sporadically, usually while typing but the background process continues to run. Right now everyone is hoping that Google is working on it for 4.3.1.

AFAIK it's only affecting the N4 and Nexus 7. N4 OTA is fine since it's from the JWR branch, however it's missing the GPU optimizations that were supposed to be in 4.3. So no performance improvement but it's stable. Anything built from AOSP has the optimizations but is highly unstable.

When I googled it, it said NST screen is glass and that's why it fails like that but I don't think it is.

Actually not a bad idea, just presented wrong. It's a camera, a regular camera, except instead of cluttering it with an expensive, delicate, battery-sucking display, it connects wirelessly to a nice display that you already have...which also means flexibility that you've never had before, like holding the camera around a corner to see if you aboot to get cap popped in yo ass.

A guy I do some work for is an insurance adjuster who doesn't want to haul around a ladder for looking at a roof, so he was talking to me about cameras that you can mount on a long pole and use a screen in your hand, basically just like that. I'll have to send him the link.
