Does OC'ing drain the battery any more?

stonehenge
03-22-2010, 04:59 PM
Yes and no. If you were to run a normal clocked phone and an OC phone side by side running an active app, the OC would die first.

BUT! the app used to overclock lets you set profiles. Like right now I have it set to drop the speed down REALLY low when it is asleep. So even though my phone uses more battery when active, it uses less than stock when in my pocket. You can also set it to lower the OC speed when the battery drops to a certain level, you can set it to drop down when the battery gets to a certain temperature (failsafe), etc.

So if you set your profiles correctly, you'll get the same battery life, sometimes better if you don't use your phone that often.

Also, when you OC you don't just set one value for it to run at. You set a min and a max. You can tell it to run 500min, 1.2ghz max. Then you can tell it to run those frequencies in powersave, conservative, performance, or on demand mode. In powersave/conservative it tries to stay towards the min you have set unless absolutely necessary. Performance obviously sticks towards the max. On Demand is right in the middle. It stays pretty close to the min but as soon as anything needs some power it speeds up.

So its very customizable.

Ehh I dunno. I can't decide what to do, but this buggy shit with it hanging up/freezing totally has got to go. Like right now even, I click Messages and it just sits there forever..

stonehenge

Well going to stock is easy if you want to do that. Then later if you decide you want to try again then flash another rom

JayBo
03-23-2010, 04:38 PM
It seems more stable to me now. ALOT faster than the other esee53 or whatever it was.

I guess I can wait for the 2.1 update to come out.

stonehenge
03-23-2010, 04:44 PM
Damn I thought ese53 was faster. Were you using live wallpapers by any chance? I found that live wallpapers and transpareny in themes were the main things that made me notice slow down.

I use normal wallpapers and applied a theme that has a non-transparent app drawer and notification window, now its a LOT faster.

interesting, not sure why you had prollemz and me and my friend don't.

stonehenge
03-24-2010, 09:40 PM
You could always try a different 2.1 rom, you know how easy it is to go back if it gives you issues

You tried UD so that leaves Simply Stunning, Bugless Beast, and probably some others. One of them comes with the stock theme so its probably a little faster. I think the stock themed one is Bugless Beast. Not sure.

stonehenge
03-26-2010, 06:53 PM
Heat could be why its running slow if you have a heat profile set to slow it down. As to why its running hot in the first place... :uhohshrug:

Have you installed any processor-intensive pr0n apps recently?

Flash a new rom?

:roflmao:

my fix for everything since i rawm flashing hoar

Currently using Simply Stunning 2.2 which is based on the 2.1 update that non-rooted peeps should be getting eventually. I honestly think it runs better than 2.0.1 did. YayBo doesn't agree but he isn't overclocked either.

Only thing that sucks when going from 2.0.1 to a 2.1 rom is you have to start fresh with no apps. It wipes everything. Contacts come back via google and you can backup apps to sd card using Linda, then restore.

Up to you.

---------- Post added at 11:15 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:11 AM ----------

I have started over with no apps/settings like 3 or 4 times :roflmao: I'm used to it by now. Phone runs so much nicer when you do a full wipe too.

AT&T has introduced its first Android-powered device, the Motorola Backflip smartphone, and it is reportedly preventing subscribers from installing non-Android Market apps from unknown sources, unlike previous Android devices from other US operators.

Other Android devices from AT&T's competitors have included support for non-market apps as a default option--something that is seen as an advantage over Apple's iPhone. As of press time, AT&T had not responded to sister publication FierceMobileContent's request to clarify the decision. According to the xda-developers Forum, developers and subscribers can work around the Backflip lockdown by installing the latest Android SDK and enabling the USB debugging option.

AT&T has also gone its own way by making Yahoo the default mobile search engine on the Backflip rather than Google.

stonehenge

2005_Silverado
04-05-2010, 05:11 PM
wan, is there advantage of going to stock, updating and then getting new rom or is it worser cuz roms out there arent made for 2.1 or whatev update be

stonehenge
04-05-2010, 05:14 PM
If you update to the official 2.1 then it is a BITCH to root/recover/flash because there isn't a current way to root the official 2.1.

Besides, when you flash a rom onto your phone, you overwrite all the stock stuff so it would be like painting a truck red before sanding it all off and painting it white like you really wanted lol

---------- Post added at 09:14 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:13 AM ----------

It is possible to root if you did the official 2.1 update but you have to use some app from your computer that is kinda risky and what you are actually doing is downgrading the phone back to 2.0.1 so you can root it.

Besides all the 2.1 roms currently available have everything the official update has, plus more.

2005_Silverado
04-05-2010, 05:16 PM
:pepper: no need to say moar, I stay with 2.0.1 :shake: repz

stonehenge
04-05-2010, 05:19 PM
There is nothing wrong with going to a 2.1 ROM you just don't want to do the official update if you like your tether and theme and whatnot.

2005_Silverado
04-05-2010, 06:17 PM
wan, is there way to stop notice from vwz about updating?

stonehenge
04-05-2010, 06:19 PM
Oh ya cuz you're on 2.0.1... I think what they said to do was tell it to go ahead and install. When it reboots, the recovery image will block the update and you can just choose "reboot" and then it will never ask you again.

Not sure tho because I'z nevar done it before.

2005_Silverado
04-05-2010, 06:20 PM
ah ok...cuz i never got mensaje, pero my buddy did and said its annoying

stonehenge
04-05-2010, 06:23 PM
You will. Update has been going out for a while now but it only goes out to so many people at a time so that the servers don't get overwhelmed.

I had 2.0.1 installed to test that BAMF theme but when I saw that update pop up I was like "fuck that" and I flashed a different rom :rofl2: that got rid of it :security:

You don't HAVE to but if you want tether and goodies then ya

2005_Silverado
04-05-2010, 06:35 PM
so what be new on 2.1 ROM?

stonehenge
04-05-2010, 06:38 PM
not mash. It's mostly "behind teh scenes" stuff that makes it run a little faster and stuff. Also, many of the 2.1 apps like the gallery and pinche zoom browser and whatnot were actually written by Google/Moto to work on the Droid. The ones you have in that 2.0.1 rom were taken from the Nexus 1 and ported over. So they run a little nicer on 2.1.

That's really it, nothing ZOMG about 2.1 vs 2.0.1.

what the hell did I do wrong?

I downloaded the Ultimate Droid for nandroid
changed the file from .zip to .tar and tried to install.

It did nothing except sit there "trying to create backup"
I had to pull the battery and restart it.

stonehenge
04-08-2010, 04:07 PM
noooo to install a nandroid you unzip the contents into /sdcard/nandroid/ROMNAME

If there is already a folder with the roms name in the zip then just drop that into nandroid so you'll end up with

/sdcard/nandroid/romname/boot.img
/sdcard/nandroid/romname/nandroid.md5
/sdcard/nandroid/romname/data.tar
/sdcard/nandroid/romname/system.tar

etc.

Then you go to recovery > backup/restore > select backup > pick the correct one > perform restore

Honestly the update.zip is easier lol you just drop it on the sdcard, rename it to update.zip, recovery > install > allow update.zip > install update.zip

JayBo
04-08-2010, 05:26 PM
Ohhhh OK so I just basically fucked up! :rofl2:

so download the update.zip, put it on the SDcard root, and install, allow update blah blah? I don't have to unzip it or anything?

stonehenge
04-08-2010, 05:27 PM
Nope, no unzipping, just make sure it is named "update.zip" and its on your sd card :shake:

And make sure you grab a full themed one, not one of the Theme Only zip files.

stonehenge
04-16-2010, 04:40 PM
Yeah there is an app to flash it but it is theme-less, with a standard kernel. So you have to flash the rom, then flash a kernel, and if you want a theme, flash that also. I did the rom/kernel. Using the stock theme for a bit but I'm already getting tired of it LOL

This rom has some interesting features. 360* rotation, USB tethering built in, when music is playing and phone is asleep you can hold vol up or down to change tracks, can install apps to your sdcard (essentially unlimited space for apps since 16gb = ZOMG ALO), more settings in Contacts app, more settings in Messages (led color, blink speed, vibrate pattern, etc), almost 100% working 3d launcher, and of course little tweaks and whatnot in the background.

So far I'm liking it. When I first installed it, it seemed slow but after putting Helix on it and overclocking it, it feels good like UD did lol

JayBo
04-16-2010, 05:10 PM
So straight up how do you like it compared to UD?

stonehenge
04-16-2010, 05:15 PM
Fresh install vs Fresh install I like UD better I think because it comes bundled with a theme and a kernel thats good to go.

But the added features in CM make it worth finding/flashing the kernel and theme. I think. LOL

Still messing with it.

JayBo
04-16-2010, 05:19 PM
Let me know. I wish the messaging app had the options you're talking about.
Handcent really has all of those options though

stonehenge
04-16-2010, 05:24 PM
I would occassionally get fuck ups with handcent. I really did like it but every now and then I wouldn't get messages or it wouldn't let me send some or I would see a message in my notification bar and then go into handcent and it wasn't there. Stupid shit like that.

This modified one has led color, blink speed, vibrate pattern, black background in txts instead of white, font size, and you can hide names.

Nothing ZOMG but just enough settings to make me not miss handcent.

JayBo
04-16-2010, 05:27 PM

BTW, UD is STILLLLLLL randomly erasing some of my text threads!! What the hell??

stonehenge
04-16-2010, 05:29 PM
CM is like DroidMod. You can download the rom from the internet and flash it yourself or you can download Rom Manager and install the recovery/rom that way. The only thing that "sucks" is that the Rom Manager also lets you flash themes, kernels, etc just by looking through a list and choosing what you want. It is actually really cool but to do that you need Rom Manager Premium ($4) :( The free version ONLY lets you flash the rom and recovery.

Oh and the Premium version also has a big list of other non-CM roms that you can flash via the app.

It might actually be worth the $4 because even if I end up not liking CM, there are a bunch of other roms on there too :hmm:

JayBo
04-16-2010, 05:34 PM

stonehenge

 about the same honestly besides those little additions I mentioned before (360 rotation, change track while phone is locked, install apps to sd card (WHICH STAY WHEN FLASHING NEW ROMS), wired tethering w/o app, etc).

With a fresh install it comes with a stock speed kernel which freaked me out for a few minutes (ZOMG SLOW WTF) but once I put a nice kernel and OC'd it, it was back to being sexeh again.

---------- Post added at 09:37 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:36 AM ----------

That is pretty pimp! No way to do it with UD si it?

stonehenge
04-20-2010, 07:00 PM
Nope, I think the only rom that is really using Apps2SD is CM.

Oh and I found this on a forum and it does a good job of explaining CyanogenMod (Note: CM has been around since the G1 came out. The source is put together by Cyanogen. There is a version of CM for almost any Android phone. Koush is the person who compiles it to work on the Droid.):

1. This rom is not a "fully loaded" rom. You won't see much more than you would see in a stock android build. It's meant to be a nice, enhanced, optimized version of "stock" android. Koush will not be deviating from Cyanogen's "vision" for the build.

2. Going along with #1 the rom is clocked to 600 by default. CM's boot.img uses a different ramdisk than all the other roms out there so your old boot.img's will not work. at the time of writing this you can use Bekit's, P3Droid's( rom manager), and Jake's. If people start packaging more kernels using Koush's "any updater" method you can use those too.

3. Again, going along with #1 requests for custom mods to the rom will likely not be accepted. changes mainly go from Cyanogen -> Koush, not the other way around. however, definitely feel free to report bugs! those are always welcome(so long as they are accompanied by a logcat!!!).

4. The rom is distributed in 2 pieces(for legal reasons). Google apps are separate from the rom. so if you ever find yourself missing things like market it's probably because you didn't install google apps.

5. If you like "flash"(not the adobe product) themers are your friend! as I already mentioned, this is not a flashy rom. it will never be. if you want to change the looks check out one of the many great themes available. be aware though, that themes can sometimes break things. if you have a good theme dev(bgill comes to mind) that shouldn't be an issue. but just make sure you backup and if you find a bug while you are themed please verify that it is there in the un-themed version before reporting to Koush. if it's a theme related bug report it to the theme dev.

6. There seems to be some widespread "fear" of clockwork recovery. I will say that there was 1 "real" bug I can think of with clockwork back in the early 1.7's. other than that a lot of the "issues" people have seen were due to the rom they were using. Koush made adjustments long ago to fight this problem even though the problem was NOT on the recovery side of things. Clockwork is as stable as anything out there. what many have failed to remember is the early days of sprecovery... it was not always as solid as it is now. and clockwork is a much younger recovery than sprecovery. it is also developed for something like 8 phones! of course there are going to be some growing pains just as there were with sprecovery back in the day. but anyways, no reason to be "afraid" of the current clockwork. it's as solid as anything.

Also the cool thing about using the Rom Manager app and Clockwork recovery is that you can download a ROM via the Rom Manager and tell it to:

1) Backup your existing rom and give it a name
2) Wipe before installing the rom
3) Install the rom

And once you check the boxes for the above options, you click OK and it reboots and does it all. No need to navigate the recovery and do it all manually. However if you ever want to install a rom that isn't in Rom Manager, you can still do it manually if you wish.

JayBo
04-20-2010, 09:04 PM
How is it stable wise? I've had mabe 1 FC on this UD the whole time Ive ran it.
How does it work overclocked?
If it locks up during a phone call like the ooold UD did, I'll bash my droid into a million bits.

stonehenge
04-20-2010, 09:09 PM
1) Very stable. I think I had 1 or 2 FCs and they were both HelixLauncher while I wasn't overclocked. I didn't wait for it to load when the phone first booted, I tried to open the app drawer as soon as it appeared, before it fully loaded. So if I had waited a second, no issues.
2) Now that its overclocked, I love it. Nice and fast, no issues, good battery life, etc.
3) Mine hasn't locked up during calls at all. If you ever felt like trying it, you could always go back to a backup of your current setup if you:

- Backup current ROM via SPRecovery > Advanced nandroid backup
- Install "Rom Manager" free from market
- Use RM to flash Clockwork recovery
- Use RM to flash CyanogenMod 5.0.6.2 (either the plain one or one of the many pre-themed versions)

Then if you didn't like it, you just put SPRecovery back (can be done inside Rom Manager or by re-running DM Updater) and reload your old backup.

Suggestions for best themes/etc? Oc kernels?

---------- Post added at 04:13 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:13 PM ----------

Also, you still using a task killing app of any kind? I have a bad habit of ending every app as soon as I get done using it. I kill them all except the ones in teh ignore list

stonehenge
04-20-2010, 09:33 PM
The cool thing is that the OC kernels can be found/installed using Rom Manager. No need to find links and forum threads and shit. I think the ones listed in RM are Bekit's kernels and P3Droid's kernels.

BUT in order to install themed roms the easy way (via RM) you have to have the full version, which is $4 :( I'm sure you could find all the themes on forums and do it manually also though. I'm using the "Clean Looks" theme which is a simple black/white theme. Loving it so far.

I was using Advanced Task Killer before but I haven't reinstalled it since I went to CM because I've been lazy :rofl2:

Before CM I had it set to auto-kill after the phone went to sleep. I also would clear caches occasionally with CacheMate.

Not sure if it actually made any difference though.

I tried it with the idea that I could always restore my old backup if I didn't like it. Then I liked it lol. Only downside would be if you bought the Premium version of the app and then decided you didn't like it. Although the free app is plenty to test it (you can install the base rom & kernels).

what did you say the paid app is good for?
just themed ROMS?

stonehenge
04-21-2010, 04:36 PM
Pretty much. It lets you download themed versions of CM and some of them are further modified versions that include extras (like UD did). You can even install UD 10 via RM but I don't think v10 is very good from what I read.

So if you're willing to theme manually then theres really no need for the paid version. I just liked it enough that I felt they deserved $4. (and I was feeling lazy as far as manually themeing goes)

JayBo

WTF is $4 nowdays anyhow?

I mean don't just go buy it right away, try the free one and make sure you like the app and the base rom, then you can pay $4 and download a themed version if you want.

Im still really happy with UD so far. Kinda wary to stray away from it

EY...

Is android's browser basically Chrome?

stonehenge
05-04-2010, 05:30 PM
I don't think so. It's based on "webkit" which is the same underlying technology that the iPhone uses. I know that the browsers themselves aren't identical but they use the same base. It is different than all the desktop browsers because its made to load everything in a more mobile-friendly way, while still keeping the same look/feel of the sites.

Dropped DROID HARD face down onto cement. :fp: :emo: Screen has a couple small chips/pits and the top right corner is cracked. From the corner over to the A in motorola. The screen is still in tact and works 100% but I'm still :pissed: at myself for dropping it.

Gonna roll it like this until I have extra money then call insurance on it and get a Seidio or something lol
