Went with "I've already paid quite thoroughly" and the magistrate agreed...it's finally over and today's $25 hearing fee was the only additional payment I had to make.

I'm getting pretty tired of getting hassled by the man.
The college where I work has teamed up with the local PD. We're paying for them to have more officers, more cars, and to take the place of what was our meager security department. Since the town doesn't have an IT department, we've been taking on some of their IT issues even when not related to the college and we're even looking at taking over 100% responsibility for their IT. They're friendly with me and just this morning two officers came to me for some help...took care of it right away for them. I wave when I see them on campus or on the road. You'd think that with all that, they wouldn't want to bother with me unless I'm actually doing something wrong...wouldn't you? Maybe not. As I leave work, I get maybe 200 yards up the road when I see a police car parked on the side, obviously doing traffic enforcement. Why he didn't park further down the road where you can actually nab speeders and tailgaters (not that they'd EVER nab somebody for riding 12 inches off my bumper), I don't know. Anyway, I wave as I pass. He enters the road behind me. I continue along my merry way, obeying the speed limits that nobody else obeys, just like I do every single day. When I'm almost to the town line he pulls me over. I sit there, getting my registration and license out on the dash and such. Then I sit there waiting. Then finally he comes out, walks up, says he's following up on my registration, and asks if I had a Nissan before I had . Then he says I'm all set and lets me go. WTF Massachusetts, get your shit together. Stop fucking scanning every fucking license plate that goes by, and get your records straight. How hard can it be to keep in touch with RI's DMV?

To be honest, I'm surprised hasn't gotten me that kind of attention before...must be the totally non-custom look (not even any tint) and complete obedience to speed limits.
