Yeop 10-15 minutes/about 8 miles from apartment. I tried using Wakeonlan.me (actual website) with my host name (DDNS service) and MAC address. That works....was able to have the gf start computer from Northern California (380 miles/6 hrs) and stepdad (1985 miles/29 hrs).

All - whats the best program to use to share files across network folders? also whats the best VPN to use? PIA and torguard are both having deals right now.
I am wanting to share folders/files over network versus having to transfer via flash drive/hard drive. Note this is from a Macbook Pro and Windows 8.1 HTPC. Really tempted to sell Macbook Pro to get newer windows laptop....hmmm

Can't Mac use regular Windows file sharing?
Could install Services for NFS on Windows (it's in add/remove Windows features). I'm sure NFS must be ready to go on the Mac.

Macs can see normal windows shares. Share a folder on your windows computer, then on the Mac click the desktop, hit Apple+K, type:
Code:
smb://IP.of.windows.computer/sharename/ Code:
smb://username:[email protected]/sharename

debating new router...current router is TPLink WR-842ND v1 running DD-WRT. this may definitely lead to my slow performance over wi-fi.

Juan - I currently have a Macbook Pro 13 inch/Early 2011/2.3 ghz i5/4gb 1333/320gb and its been running real laggy lately (like beach ball status when running chrome).
Is it best to clean the hard drive? install more ram? get new computer? what?

Anyone know of a place that has a list of the IT endorsments you can have on LinkedIn? I need to spruce my LinkedIn page up tremendously, it's shit right now and I didn't even bother with endorsements ever.

Depends.
Free: back things up, wipe HD, install fresh OSX Cheap: upgrade RAM to 8gb or 16gb and get an SSD. Will make it faster. $$$: Send me your current Mac and buy a new one. Sent from my Nexus 7 (2013)

Give me the right offer and I'll sell it to you. Been thinking about getting Windows laptop.
What are your opinions though? Get new computer or spend money for upgrades?

We've been throwing ram/ssd at i5 machines that are 3-5 yes old and it makes them great. I just put an ssd in my work lappy and it made a huge difference. 8gb + ssd is usually <$150 for Crucial stuff, not cheap brands.
