Here, you have to get them done at emissions stations that are run by AZDOT. They don't let mechanics and shops and shit do it like other states.
Luckily they have them at pretty much every corner of the city and a few in between. ---------- Post added at 09:30 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:22 AM ---------- Some coworkers were sending emails back and forth about "Duel Booting W7" and the title made me jest. I asked them if this involved two OSes fighting to the death but they were like wut

Ours used to be $10 or $15 or something, yearly, now with emissions it's $40 for two years. It's all done at independent shops, but they have to use the machine that the state says to use and it's pretty foolproof for OBD2 cars. For pre-OBD2 it could probably be fooled by testing another car.

The emissions are $12.50 for the test, it can last one or two years depending on how much you pay when you renew your registration. Two years saves you a few bucks.
For pre-odb2 you have to put the car on rollers and keep it at a certain mpg for them to get a loaded reading. Then they test your gascap, look under the hood, use a mirror to verify the cats are there, etc. For odb2, they just plug it in, test the cap, and make sure your hood stays latched and then you gtfo.

---------- Post added at 11:18 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:15 AM ---------- oh yeah and ours doesn't have any "inspection" besides testing the gas cap, making sure the hood latches, and if you are pre-96 then they check for the cat and emissions components under the hood. They dgaf about anything else besides that. My bro had an 85 rcsb chevy and it passed all the emissions numbers but they didn't see the smog canister or w/e under the hood so they failed him. Fgts.

Emissions tests are like yours, but safety/misc tests are more thorough here...they check ball joints/wheel bearings/etc, all lights, exhaust noise, brakes (hydraulic (does pedal hold proper height), friction material, and actual effectiveness), parking brake, tires (tread and rot), wipers, shock absorbers, body rot, motor mounts, etc.
Road is still full of rusted out shitboxes.
