I bet the complaints from people who know and care are far less than would be from the majority of people who don't get it and hate letterboxed displays.

I hate when I download a video somewhere that's been passed around from -tube site to -tube site and it's been letterboxed horizontally and vertically multiple times so it's the size of a postage stamp with 5 different colors of black surrounding it. Letterboxing should be the responsibility of the player software, not a modification of the video itself. I wish there was software that can batch process videos and unletterbox them.

Yeah. I understand how movie makers could be upset if they put their time into making sure every scene is cropped just how they like but as the person paying for Netflix, idgaf. I only pay $8/mo for tons of movies, I don't mind if a couple inches are cropped off. Also, I'm not a fan of black bars so thanks Netflix.

Should be an option to toggle, handled by the player. Should not be added to or cut from stored imagery...

Now, granted, when you want pan&scan sometimes that needs to be done by a professional human editor to make sure the most important parts of the frame are on-screen; so for something like Netflix they could easily just offer both versions.
