Sequence of events:
1. Leaking radiator. I ignored. 2. "Temp" light came on. I adjusted my driving style to maximize cooling. 3. I stopped to check coolant level. It boiled over when I opened it. Closed it up and went on my way, nothing else I could do. I had to keep going and just hope it would make it home. I was bringing wife home from the hospital, she was in delicate condition and she is more important than . It was a hot day and I couldn't turn off A/C with her in that condition. 4. "Engine" light came on, indicating oil pressure below 4psi. Nothing I could do, had to keep hoping it'd make it home. Anyway, the light didn't stay on. 5. Rattling began. Kept going. Sorry, . 6. Engine stalled. It didn't seize (rear wheels kept turning, and don't forget I have a manual transmission so no torque converter to slip) but it stopped running. I did not attempt to restart. Oil level was good and oil condition looked okay. 7. Towed home. 8. I procrastinated, then eventually compression-tested. I took some borescope videos and spark plug photos but haven't uploaded them. ---------- Post added at 11:06 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:06 AM ---------- So anyway, I lack the expertise to say what happened beyond giving you the story.

So did the plugs have oil on them? I would assume it would warp the head before it fucked the rings up. Maybe blown head gasket?

One plug looks like it might have a little oil. I'll see about getting that shit uploaded.
I've come to the decision that I really just want to go ahead with a V8 even if I can repair this. Can't afford it but I see it only getting worse in the future.

With the over heating part, I would assume head gasket before rings. Compression could be leaking back into the water jacket. Get the head milled and go again. If you are set on v8 swap, do it. If you want to get it running quickly, I would look into the warped head theory.
---------- Post added at 07:43 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:40 PM ---------- But then again, my s10 over heated when the water pump went out and basically was in the same situation as you, no where to stop. It warped the head and is still running today but I had the head re-done and it hasn't held good oil pressure ever since. I'm guessing it scored a bearing somewhere. Holds great oil pressure for the first10 min or so then slowly starts falling down. It never gets below 20 psi at idle but it used to hold 45 idling. It has been that way for about 120k miles and I drive it 100 miles a day to work and back.

Lame-ass photos of spark plugs:
https://plus.google.com/photos/10465...865?banner=pwa Compression test pattern is consistent with rings but if I want to be sure I need to do a wet test.

I can not see the pics…no access.
If it has been leaking water into the cylinder at all, the plugs will not have any carbon build up at all. They should look really clean on one or two cylinders if it was leaking water. If it has just a warped head, I guess that wouldn't be a obvious sign it it wasn't close to a water jacket.

is buick not chevy tyler............those heads dont warp so easily and rarely blow gaskets. i can see a ring going first or a valve burnt out.

No, Jeff, if it had water in it, it would be spotless, no carbon build up at all. Plugs look pretty good, a little lean it appears…I've had a lot of nitrous experience and reading plugs is a every pass time thing when you're on a 250+ shot. I have never messed with a buick so Jeff is probably correct. I'm just pulling off my past experiences with SBC and LS stuff.
---------- Post added at 12:13 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:05 PM ---------- But I also don't see a large amount of oil on any of them either that would indicate a ring failure resulting in massive blow by. Again, I'm just going off what I have seen in the past and buick may be completely different.

Lean is likely. I watch my vacuum gauge and try to stay out of enrichment, plus I may have had some vacuum leaks...and you're supposed to re-jet slightly richer for manual transmissions but I kept mine the way it was.

I can really decipher what number each plug is but I think #1 does appear to be darker than the rest. Was is oily at all? Good burning plugs will be on the darker side like that one but not oily or built up with oil

I didn't number them, I just did front/middle/rear and driver/passenger. Couldn't remember what order they are numbered in.
I'll have to see if it's oily when I get home. Maybe it's worth piecing it back together if it's just a head gasket, then I can take my time finding a 350. ---------- Post added at 11:07 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:41 AM ---------- Borescope imagery: CylinderDriversFront1 Video page Full screen CylinderDriversMiddle Video page Full screen CylinderDriversRear Video page Full screen CylinderPassengerFront Video page Full screen CylinderPassengerMiddle Video page Full screen CylinderPassengerRear Video page Full screen

Passenger front looks a little oily and the plug looks darker for that one?

I agree with Juan on that
---------- Post added at 03:18 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:13 PM ---------- Was cylinder #1 on passenger side the lowest compression reading?

The oily one held good compression it appears. That makes no sense lol. Have you attempted to start it since all this happen other than just turning it over for compression?

Okay, so the plan is: 1. Wet compression test. 2. Put it back together and start it. What could I destroy worse if I start and run it now? That crankshaft may have some value to sell, so if starting it could be the difference between an undamaged crankshaft and a worthless one then I don't want to.

If its rings or warped head. It won't really hurt much that isn't already hurt to start it up for a few seconds to see what happens. If its a bearing its fucked anyway

a hillbilly talks buicks with a cow
I bet it just boiled the fuel in the lines and died. The low oil pressure may have hurt it some. I would change all the fluids and run it.
Well that and fix the radiator. Last edited by Dubyagee; 08-29-2014 at 02:48 PM. Reason: gvhxdcb |
