They're still around. They're $750-1000 these days. They're mostly not customized, and as they always did, they have dents and problems. Stop looking for a vehicle to be proud of for that price; look for a vehicle that goes. The less desirable it is, the better you'll do.

4 banger 5 speed rcsb Rangers of any year are the $750-1000 beaters, and they get good FE. You can lower them for free in the rear, and cheap in the front (or free in the front if you don't mind cutting coils).
The S-10 qualifies too but the 2.2 is known for head gasket failure. The Ford 4 banger lasts forever, along with the rest of the truck.
