Remember the Pontiac Aztek? Remember how it was a miserable failure? It was a crossover SUV before the category existed. It was everything that vehicles are now, back then.

Remember in Back To The Future when Marty jumped on stage and played Johnny B. Goode and the crowd was like WTF and Marty was like "Oh...uh, sorry, guess you guys aren't ready for that yet."? Well, that's the Aztek.

Its minivan functionality, car-based construction, transverse engine, etc are all found in the most popular SUVs and crossovers on the market today. Hell, even its ugly duckling angular styling (back in a day when everything was rounded and smooth) is found on modern vehicles....

I disagree that it's uglier (and I didn't even post the ugliest new vehicles that are somehow succeeding, I was just looking for ones that had something in common with it), but I agree about the name. GM is good at picking bad names, like the Avalanche - an avalanche is a deadly disaster, why name a vehicle after it?

I suspect if you threw some 20 inch wheels and another manufacturer's badge on it, with no other modifications you could put it on the market right now and it would succeed in spite of people knowing it's really the Aztec.

i love the 80s pontiacs that ventura is sweet but i never like the lights on them

the 69 grand prixs are about the prettiest big 60s pontiac that or the early 60 cars that had the 421 sd engines

btw as far as looks go when comparing the aztec to the newer crossovers, I think the biggest reasons it is fugly are:

- tiny wheel/tire combo in relation to vehicle size
- godawful rear window design

If the ass end was nicer looking and it had larger wheel wells to offset the bulkiness of the body, it may not have looked so bad.

The wheels/tires were normal back then and nobody really minded. It was considered ugly because of the things it had in common with now-modern styling.
