Its easy once you get past the first couple of months. I cycled it for two months, thought it was ready, but it still isnt. Having a cycle of diatom bloom right now, so, I will be doing a water change this weekend.

But once my biopellets kick in, it will be easy mode. I had quite a bit more coral, but gave it away when I did the tank transfer. The corals I gave away were trouble makers, always stinging peaceful corals and shit.

It took so long cause I used dry live rock. If I bought shit straight from the ocean, it wouldnt have been so bad. Problem is, the shit straight out of the ocean is expensive as fuck and comes loaded down with pest. Rarely do you get something nice in the shipment.

Freshwater, I never cycled. I said fuck it. I would de-chlorinate the water and then shove the fish in after acclimating to temperature. It so easy to do a water change in freshwater tanks.

When I do a saltwater change, I have to dig out my 35 gallon trash-can used strictly for mixing, fill it it ro/di water from my filtration system (which would take about 5 hours, since its a 75gpd system), throw in a pump, throw in the salt, and measure the salinity with a refractometer until it reads 1.025 sg.

Or you can buy it for a dollar a gallon. Salt mix is about 20 bucks for 50 gallons of mix.

Some pictures I took a couple of nights ago. I cant get the white balance correct on my camera, so the colors of the corals arent as vivid.

This coral is non-photosynthetic, and require to be hand fed daily. They are eating mysis shrimp in this photo.

I have a 4 bulb t5ho fixture. One bulb is a 10k, another 14k, third is a fiji purple, and the last one is an actinic.

The actinics and fiji purple bulbs are on the blue side, like 420 to 450 nm, and they cause corals to fluoresce. Most corals posses this ability, but like i said, I cant capture it because my fucking camera has a shitty white balance setting.

Although I wouldn't put tropical fish in there. I'd have to walk down to the beach and net a few spot, angelfish and maybe something else that looks pretty and is decently small. Can get urchins, coral, etc too. Just gotta hit up the inlet at low tide. :hmm:

badass looking setup Heath. seems like lots of work, but well worth it when it gets up and running.

What kind of maintenance do you have compared to a freshwater tank?

Fatso
10-28-2011, 05:44 PM
Maintenance just depends on what equipment you are using and what you intend on keeping. Fish only salt tanks are on par with freshwater, where sps reef tanks take serious money and attention to detail.

Small polyp stonies. Its a generic term for a group of corals who use lots of calcium and magnesium to build their skeletal structure. They have small polyps and a thin layer of tissue covering the skeleton. They require pristine water conditions, very strong lighting and flow, and good waste capture and export. There are a few exceptions to the rule, but acropora and millipora fit that well. Birdsnest are pretty easy to grow so long as mag and calc levels are good.

race2c
10-28-2011, 06:05 PM
like this? judging by the pic sps tanks must be extremely pricey.

Fatso
10-28-2011, 06:12 PM
Yea. Sps on top and lps on the lower part of the tank. The equipment cost gets stupid. I have a calcium reactor waiting for install, but I need to make an effluent chamber that can hold my ph regulators probe, also need to drop about 250 on a co2 tank, regulator, and valve.

Once I get it running, ill start adding more lps and doimg some sps.

Awesome setup Heath. Had one a long time ago. But, after my last saltwater adventure crashed and cost me a $3500 setup, I've since gotten into fancy goldfish. I'd rather lose 2 $15-$20 freshies than an entire tank of $40-$50 salt water fish.

Started on my Aux/Frag stand. The frag tank will need to be custom built ,but will easily plump into the main displays sump. The real reason though, for the second stand, is to hold and hide shit like my dj power switch panels, auto-top off tank, various electrical controllers, and a co2 tank with regulator/valve.

I want to cover the stand in maple, like the stand for my display, but I think I am hosed. Maple is going to be about 400 bucks in material. Ash is similar in color but but doesnt come in ply locally, so I can only get 4'x8' sheets of 10mil veneer... no thanks.
I guess I am stuck with poplar and birch. FUCK YOU LOWES, HOME DEPOT, ACE, and WOODCRAFT.

Oh i understand that part but here is a list of terms that idkwtf:

Aux/Frag stand

main displays sump
dj power switch panels
auto-top off tank

Aux/Frag stand= stand whos main purpose is holding items like the power switch panels, auto top off tank, and co2 canister.
Frag tank= holds corals that I will fragment, separated from the colonies in my display tank. Serves the purposed of letting them grow out, so I can sell them later at a prawfit.
Plumb into- plumbing into the sump that handles all the filtration for my display tank.
Main displays sump- sump refers to a tank or large container that sits in the stand of the display tank. It holds filtration items such as the return pump, carbon reactor, biopellet reacor, and protein skimmer. Can also house a refugium, if the sump is large enough.
Dj power switch- google it
Auto-top of tank- tank that holds fresh water (not salt) to replace water that evaporates out of the display tank or sump. Its controlled by one or two float switches, which trip a relay that powers a pump in the top off tank. Pretty handy.

Lame.

When I needed a cabinet, I created rocks, pulverized them, created and pulverized life, mixed the pulverized life and rocks to make soil, then molecule by molecule I made a seed to grow a tree. Once the tree was grown I chopped it down with a herring (which I had made myself, also) and proceeded to mill it using tools that I made.
