View Full Version : Google forgot where they came from

Remember when Google came out and it was awesome because it was a plain white page with a text box, two buttons, and a text logo? It was, of course, also awesome that it had such intelligent indexing and search results.

One of the great things was "Cached" in the results. At a glance you could judge illegitimacy by the lack of "Cached", and you could click "Cached" to quickly see the exact page that Google indexed, have the text you searched for highlighted, etc. They went and screwed it up. Now you have to hover your mouse over the preview thingy to pop up the preview, wait for it to pop up, then maybe find "Cached" in there.

DAMNIT GOOGLE WE WANT OUR CACHED LINKS! :bird:
:fiwdil: Users whose browser supports scripting (Firefox with Greasemonkey, Opera without anything special) can install this script to get it back:

Yahoo has "Cached" and looks like Google but the results seem to come up in a different order.

Bing does not have "Cached".

:sacfp:

I just realized what the solution is: Disable javascript for Google. (Opera lets you set that per site.) With javascript disabled, I get all of the behavior I want and none of the behavior I don't. Search results provide the "Cached" link right on the results page. No previews exist. Google Image Searches give me the old-school header when I click them, where I can easily click directly on the image URL.

Win.
