Need headphones.... suggestions?

I need a pair of headphones that meet some certain criteria. Here's the deal. I'm going to West Va. on Friday to do some 4 wheeler riding. Well, we're planning on riding 8-10 hours a day in 1-2 hour sessions, so I'm thinking I want to load my phone up with music so I at least have something to listen to besides the 4 wheelers. So.... need an earbud style that:

-Small enough to be worn under a helmet
-Fairly long cord (I'm 6'2")
-Comfy enough to be worn for a long time.
-Sound decent
-Kinda cheap... just in case I end up breaking them somehow. After all, I'm going riding...

Suggestions?

I like Skull Candy headphones. I had a cheap pair of earbuds that were <$20 and they sounded great. They have rubber or silicone rubber that help to block outside sound and enhance bass at the same time. They lasted me years.

Now I have a nicer pair that were around $60 and they sound even better and have a bamf braided cord. LOL

But check out their cheap ones.

I was thinking Skull Candy. I don't need something that's going to 100% block out the sound of the bikes, cause hell, the sound of 6-8 quads blasting through the woods sounds like music to me. Just something to give myself a little more to listen to as like a background noise sort of thing. I'm one of those guys that listens to the radio in the car just barely loud enough to hear it, just to fill in the silence.

The skullcandy's do a good job at blocking out sound but at the same time, they aren't the foam type that expand to fill your ear like earplugs. And the cheap ones aren't designed to block all sound out or anything.

Anything that doesn't have those little cushions will fall out of your ears anyway. :down:

For $20 or so, Meelectronics are a much better deal than Skull Candies. Then again, if you are only spending sub $10 its hard to beat Skull Candies.

You're looking at some seriously conflicting needs. I think your biggest concern will be how they connect to your ears. If they fall out while you're riding you're not going to ask your buddies to stop while you take off your helmet, take off your gloves for dexterity, and start fooling around with it again. The other option could get painful as they get jammed in the worst possible place between the helmet and your head.

You'll need in-ear-canal ones, but for silicone ones to stay in during that activity you'll need to use an uncomfortably-sized rubber thingy. Even then you'll need to pull up on your ear while you insert, insert with the cord facing up, and wrap the cord around your ear multiple times.

I think I've seen another brand that is even more aggressively shaped.

I don't know if these would fit under your helmet, but if they would then they might be the better option.

AFAIK they only ever came with Rio Forge mp3 players. You might still need to add Acoustibuds to keep out some of the engine noise so you can hear the music.

There must be in-helmet two-way radio systems. How are their speakers rigged so you can clearly hear what people are saying? I imagine that buying one just to hook up the mp3 player will be out of your budget.

Those Rio ones remind me!I have a pair of Panisonics that were probably under $20 and they have that black piece that goes over the ear like the Rios AND they are inner-ear with the silicone. So they stay on and sound great. Might be best of both worlds.

I haven't found over-the-ear phones that fit as well as the Rio ones, but then I don't think I've tried any decent ones.

I just can't stand the flat earbuds like those rios or the iphone ones. Most the time they fall out of my ear and when they do manage to stay in, they don't sound nearly as nice as ones with silicone/foam cushions. But if you don't want outside sound drained out they are the best choice I suppose.

I too mostly dislike any that don't go inside the ear canal, although there are times when I do like them - if I've just gotten out of the shower, for example, sticking earbuds in my ear canal hurts.

Anyway, Acoustibuds attach to standard-sized flat earbuds and convert them to in-ear-canal, which is why I think they'd be good with the Rios...but if those Panasonics you have are decent, I may try to acquire some. I've never tried Acoustibuds but they look like they'd stay in better than the other in-ear-canal options even without ear hooks.

Oh one downside (depending on the user) of the panasonics are that they have a fairly short cord. But that may be because the other two pairs I use regularly are crazy long.

Tried to find the Panasonics on google shopping but I don't see them. Maybe they are an old model. But I did see several others that are probably just the newer version of them. They look a little different but probably perform the same.

Best money we've ever spent. Use them for racing.

You custom fit them to your ear. Have to mix the stuff, kinda like sillyputty. Then get somebody to help mould it into your ear. Put them in after they've set up, put some duct tape/whatever tape you have on hand over you ear, firesuit mask, then helmet. Can hear perfectly and block out most of the engine noise/noise from the other guys.

Never had one fall out yet from not fitting properly.

Your biggest problem is going to be the cord. I've pulled them out sometimes if I dont have the cord routed properly getting in and out of the car, once im sitting im good though. With riding, and constantly moving I'm not sure how your going to do that.

TL;DR - buy those ones. made of win.

Well I ended up buying some cheap $10 iFrog ones from Wally World since it's getting to be last minute, and I had to make a trip there anyway.

Tried them on under the helmet and they feel fine and sound pretty good. Only issue is taking the damn thing off. They dig in a bit but I think any of them are going to do that.

Honestly this is probably the only time I'll ever use them, if I use them, cause I normally don't ride for hours on end without taking breaks like I will be this weekend. So no sense in going crazy.

Yeah... I was thinking the same thing when I posted. I'm still not dead set on riding with them in though. I like to hear what's going on around me, and listen to the bike so I know what it's doing and all that crap.

I'm gonna try it with the cheapies. If I like it, then I'll upgrade.

These may be the worst sounding earbuds I've ever tried, and I've tried plenty of dollar store crap. The ear-hook ones are slightly better. I didn't bother with the headband phones.

What I am interested in is something really good to use with my phone. I hate bluetooth shit, that's great if you use it every day so you can keep it charged (or keep a good AAA battery in it) and paired but I don't...and I need something that blocks wind noise while I drive with my windows open.

I love the earbud set that came with my Samsung M500 except it's not in-ear-canal type so it doesn't block wind noise or stay in my ears. I recently realized that, rather than spend another dollar on another earphone, I ought to just spend $10 on Acoustibuds for the thing that I already love.
