Won't work like that. It looks like there's space for them there but there's not. The end result would be that they're entirely on top of the bumper and in front of the grill, and would look absolutely terrible on this car.

if this was my car i would trim the bumper some take out the huge turn signals convert to fogs/turn signal combo

in fact you could just take out one signal bulb install a 55w bulb with a switch and have fogs and signal.

any way to convert the inside bumper light to a DRL and the outside to a blinker?

shootermcgavin003

idk why you would want a drl on a 1981 car but the outside could be just the same as the inside its a bulb blinker in both lights

I'd mount them up and check the beam position to find the best location.........possible to take out the front tag bolts and use those to mount the lights? It's gonna be ugly anyways, so make it easily removeable.

I went with option 1.

I spent way too long and struggled way too hard drilling into my bumper. At first I thought it was the hardest metal known to man...then I found my good drill bits and realized that the ones I was using were awful.

i was going to say in between bumper and grill

me i would find some that are rectangular not oval though would flow with car better

The space between the bumper and grill is an illusion. They could fit in front of the grill but it would be godawful fugly. I could remove the small grill sections under the headlights and put them there and make trim to fill the gap but that's too much work and I think it'd be more ugly.

These are rectangular.

if this was my car i would trim the bumper some take out the huge turn signals convert to fogs/turn signal combo

That's actually a decent idea, if I had lights that look like they match the car. Not sure it'd work with these modern mofos.

in fact you could just take out one signal bulb install a 55w bulb with a switch and have fogs and signal.
Would not work. The housing doesn't have reflectors in it, and even if it did they'd be optimized for turn signals, not driving lights. I'm doing this because I can't see decently at night, my Buick's high beams are like an average modern car's low beams.

any way to convert the inside bumper light to a DRL and the outside to a blinker?

Yes, that'd be a piece of cake. I did something like that on my Cadillac. These days I feel that it would draw too much attention (as if the car doesn't already stick out like a sore thumb).

the outside could be just the same as the inside its a bulb blinker in both lights

Mine isn't, only the inside is a blinker, the outside is just a single-filament parking light.

Win.

It's easily removable anyway, just four small screws holding them to the underside of the bumper. Take out screws, done.

do you live in a camper now

No. I will eventually get back into taking it out for vacations though, if I ever have money before it rots to uselessness.

The lights are pretty worthless. Drat. Usually I've had good luck with cheap lights. Well, they'll make good auxiliary backup lights on the truck, camper exterior lights, work lights, etc, and the car is ready to just bolt on some different lights and plug them right in.

If you get the "baja" lights from wal-mart for about $20 they work much better. I used them for fogs for awhile, then mounted them on the frame for "rock-lights" because it seemed like I always needed to work under my truck in the dark. No more flash-lights for this guy.

Bad thing is they're about 4"x6".

Best option is probably finding sealed beam sylvania's and swapping lights. Put old lights in the trunk for spares in case of burnt out bulb when leaving bar.

theholycow
07-05-2011, 02:45 AM
I bought Sylvania Xtravision but they were barely any better than what was already on the car - I think one was OE and the other was Sylvania. I still have to turn on my high beams to get light like modern low beams.

Those huge Baja lights won't work for me. Do not want huge lights.

I have some lights on the truck that I no longer use there, I'll probably slap those on. I also have some extra lights somewhere in my basement.

Another option is sealed beam->composite conversion, potentially with HIDs (if I can avoid glaring).

One other option would be sealed beam high beams in the low beam position. My high beams are similar to low beams on a modern car but I'd still feel like a jerk. I have an extra pair of old ones I could slap in...

ok change the socket and bulb to a dual stage bulb set up then ad some 55 wat fog lights

I asked for sealed beam->composite conversion lights for xmas, they use 9003/HB2 dual stage bulbs.

and there rectangular but the sides are oval just need clear perfect rectangles imo

I later ended up with rectangular lights whose clear, textured/diffused lenses are more appropriate for a 1980 car but never mounted them.

The lights are pretty worthless. Drat. Usually I've had good luck with cheap lights. Well, they'll make good auxiliary backup lights on the truck, camper exterior lights, work lights, etc, and the car is ready to just bolt on some different lights and plug them right in.

I've come to realize that they're not so worthless, they just don't project far forward...they do light up the sides really well, good for deer that I might not see when it's almost too late. I'd still rather have them project forward and light up the deer before it gets that late.

Also asked for xmas: Hella Optilux H71010321 Model 2020 Dual Beam Halogen Fog/Driving Lamp Kit
http://www.amazon.com/Optilux-H71010321-Model-Halogen-Driving/dp/B0002MA3OO
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41oUoH1fxKL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

Each housing has two lights inside it, one that's supposed to project, one that's supposed to do fog/wide angle lighting.
