DRM is Digital Rights Management. It protects the record companies by preventing you from copying stuff. It sucks. One example is the AAC files you buy from iTunes Music Store. For an example of DRM-free files, the MP3 files you download from Amazon MP3 never have DRM.

Ruckus was similar to iTunes Music Store or Amazon MP3 or Rhapsody, except it was free. Its collection was pretty complete, and included most new music as well as old stuff. Downloads were crazy fast, however fast your internet connection was is how fast you'd get your downloads. The files were DRM-protected.

It was marketed exclusively to college students, in an attempt to provide a legal way for them to get their music for free while protecting the rights of the copyright holders.

As of a couple days ago, it has closed. That sucks.

:shrug: I have posted about it before on GMFS.

You have to have a .edu email address to use it, but it should be possible for most people to swing that.
