That's definitely a little low. Also, you might not want to commit to a diagnostic fee. Sometimes a job that's hours of work is actually hours of diganosis and minutes of repair.

Virus clean is definitely too low, unless you intend to charge more for difficult ones. I'm an expert virus battler but I would want $80 for a medium virus and $200 for a really nasty one.

I just charge by the hour. $50 for the first hour (to cover some gas and travel time), then $35/hour after that.

Ok time for IT thread resurrection.

We setup a new Windows server 2008 domain and have tried joining several machines from different departments/buildings to it with no issues.

Until today. There is one department that joins the domain, can login, but only their personal drives map. There are others that should map based on the users group but in this one department they wont map. Their personal/profile drives load but not the others.

Wtf

theholycow
10-18-2010, 10:58 PM
Did you look at the event logs on the DC and the client PC?

stonehenge
10-18-2010, 11:49 PM
We haven't troubleshooted it too much. I grabbed a PC from a department that worked and took it to that building and it joined/mapped fine. But the computers that originated in that department won't. We're thinking that the tech that used to run that department must have done something crazy with all the machines. He either removed components that his domain didn't need or disabled something. They are currently on an OLD linux domain.

What's weird is, the machines in that screwy department join the domain flawlessly and allow users to login, change their password, access their personal drive, etc.

Just no extra shared drives :fp:

Will look into it more tomorrow. I'm tired.

theholycow
10-18-2010, 11:53 PM

stonehenge
10-19-2010, 09:11 PM
I think we figured it out. The drive is mapped using GP Preferences. Apparently XP machines need an add-on installed to make use of them. I guess the machines in all the other departments had the add-on installed and that department never did. :fp:

Going to go test it out in an hour or so.

theholycow
10-19-2010, 11:38 PM
Yup, XP does require the GPP extension. I've never gotten GPP to work even after installing the extension, and I gave up trying.

Why not map home drives in the user properties?

stonehenge
10-19-2010, 11:43 PM
Their home drives have been fine the whole time via user properties. It was the additional drives that weren't showing up on computers without the GPP extension. As soon as we installed the extension and logged out/in, they showed up.

I had read/heard about the GPP extension somewhere a while ago and knew it would be needed for some of the newer group policies but I thought mapped drives would have been an old policy that was in 2003 and even earlier so I completely forgot about the GPP extension until today.

theholycow
10-19-2010, 11:59 PM
OIC. Yeah, anything under the "Preferences" tree requires the GPP extension.

I think you can map drives in "Policies" too. Either way you can map drives with a login script.

stonehenge
10-20-2010, 12:02 AM
Well the guy I work with setup the drives so I didn't know it was under preferences :fp: i assumed it was under one of the old categories. Oh well.

Well guys, I've been studying to take the CompTIA Network+ exam in a few weeks, that is why I haven't been on as much lately, been studying in my free time. I'm trying to get it and A+ before the new rules go in effect at the start of 2011.

theholycow
10-26-2010, 01:50 PM
It's reasonable :imo.

If you didn't know tech stuff and wanted to pay someone to do it for you, would you want someone who has been recertified recently or someone who is not required to be up-to-date?

I predict that CompTia will milk the new A+ rule to drive a bunch of business before it's too late, chill for a while, then replace the A+ certification with a new one so that all lifetime A+ certs become obsolete.

Chevrolet Fanatic
10-28-2010, 07:52 AM
Guess they are going the way of Cisco, Microsoft and most others who require you to renew them every 3 years. To be honest though, most of the IT people I know with a Cisco or Microsoft certification just put down on their resumes the year they got theirs and never do renew them.

stonehenge
10-28-2010, 07:56 AM
No one where I work has them afaik, but it does look good on resumes like you said.

Really I was just wanting to get my Network+ and A+ to help get my foot in the door and get a job. I'm experienced and am a really fast learner, the guy I was working with during my internship told me I knew twice as much as him at this age so I guess that was good haha. Every place around here wants someone with at least 3+ years of experience too, and I only have 1 right now. I'm hoping having these 2 certifications would help differentiate myself from the crowd at least a little more. I'm just going to have to keep an eye out for all jobs, maybe I'll finally land a good one where I can at least get some more experience. I'm wanting to get a network admin/server admin job.

Ok so I bought a Linksys WRT54G-TM with DD-WRT and just set it up as a normal router because I have no clue what the firmware is/does. Is there any advantages as setting it up as a repeater? Someone care to school me a little? Cow?

theholycow
11-16-2010, 02:36 AM
You probably have no need for DD-WRT but if you've already installed it then don't worry aboot it...just use it the way you already planned to use it.

A repeater is what you need if you have a router that doesn't reach as far as you want. You put the repeater halfway between the router and the user and it repeats the signal.

MikeH
11-16-2010, 02:40 AM
It came preinstalled. We have a fairly small house so signal is decent throughout. It came with longer antennae too. My parents have the same router minus dd-wrt and it seemed to never cause us any problems so I just bought the first new one I could find for a decent price.

theholycow
11-16-2010, 02:42 AM
They're selling them new with DD-WRT preinstalled? Neato!

Chevrolet Fanatic

My WRT54G is a newer version and it doesn't have enough ram to support DD WRT. The older ones, for some reason, had more.

Hardware specs?

I knew I should have wrote those down. Ummm.... by memory I think it's a Dell GX60 (I think), 1.8Ghz, 20G hard drive (sounds right), can't remember the RAM... maybe 512 if I had to guess... lol. It's like a bare bones estimating computer for a body shop office.

Nothing fancy, just needs to run one program. They've been running the program on Win2K, but a recent update came out and they had problems. They called the company, and they said it was all due to Win2K (of course).

Problem is, I don't have a spare WinXP CD or key or anything. And it's one of those deals where nobody wants to spend any money on any kind of anything for this thing. So basically, I either make it work one way or another, or they get mad.

theholycow
12-02-2010, 10:07 PM
OIC.

You really shouldn't be messing with installing illegitimate software for a client or employer.

If all it needs is to run that one program, maybe it could run in WINE (http://www.winehq.org/) or ReactOS (http://www.reactos.org/en/index.html)?

So we have a department where the two techs quit and I had to take over the server and a new guy took over their desktop support. He tried to add a printer to some womans computer and it told him he didn't have permission, even though he is using an adminstrator account. I don't see why he wouldn't be allowed to unless they have some stupid shit setup to manage printers. Time to investigate.

Need to figure out why he isn't allowed to. Windows Server 2003 Enterprise btw

theholycow
12-14-2010, 06:13 PM
A member of the Domain Admins group ought to have unfettered access to add a printer. Did you get the exact error message? Most likely it was one of those stupid errors that pretends to be a permission failure.

stonehenge
12-14-2010, 06:15 PM
Nope, he just came to my desk and was like "ohyaheygai I tried to add a printer yesterday and it said no permisisons lolwut can you fix it servergai? thx bai"

:blahclap:

Gonna email him and tell him to get an exact error for me. He should have permission to add/remove a printer. Even if they have some sort of server implementation, it would just remove the printer he added if it didn't like it, it shouldn't block him from manually adding one.

Sure brah :wank:

Anyway, now I have some peeps that randomly can/cant remote into a machine. I've tried it from my desk and get the same results. I will try to remote and it won't be able to find the machine I'm remoting to. Then a few minutes later I'll try again (making NO changes) and it will find it right away.

I'm thinking bad switch, bad cable, or bad network card. hmm

I'm considering opening a store front sometime soon - probably summer since business is better. What is everyone's opinion on the economy and pricing?

At the moment, from my house, I get $25 minimum & 25/hr after that. $75-$100 for Factory Restore depending on how long it takes. $50 minimum if I have to open up a laptop (hardware wise), $25/hr after that. I don't charge extra for service calls, just the $25 minimum no matter if it's 5 minutes or a full hour. For malware cleanup it's also just the standard 25/hr.

Building rent would most likely be free, since my parents own a bunch of road frontage buildings... I'd just need to cover utilities & Internet. There is ONE other store front in the next town over that does it, and one other guy that advertises but works out of his home like myself. Not sure how many freelance guys there are aside from myself, but word of mouth seems to get me alot of business and good reviews.

I do everything from malware cleanup to hardware replacement on laptops and desktops such as screens, motherboards, etc. Mac & PC.

A few minutes later I get an email reporting an SSL certificate error at the main site. The site should still have the old certificate, which should still be valid.

I'm talking about it with the co-worker who reported it and my boss saunters up. I explain it to him and he tells me that it's been messed up like that for months and he's reported it repeatedly and tried to get them to make it right.

Yup. They weren't using NT before that...they could have used earlier versions of NT. They were using the home-user-market OS, and 2000 was not originally intended for the home user market, ME was.

ME wasn't the steaming turd that people remember it as...it was just the latest version of an obsolete OS, trying hard to pretend it's up-to-date.

Come to think of it, I think MS has provided utilities that can convert a live filesystem. I'm pretty sure there was one that could turn a FAT16 FS into FAT32. I know for a fact that XP has one to convert FAT32 into NTFS; I used it yesterday. Doesn't answer the size question, though.

I've always known how psexec works and I've used it a few times, but for some reason I never thought to use it to push software installs and such. :fp: It's generally not a problem on my employee domain where the user is usually a local administrator, but on the student computer lab domain it's tough because a logon script runs as the user. Anyway I am using it right now to push two pieces of software to every computer and it's working just right.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897553
Direct download: http://live.sysinternals.com/psexec.exe

Single line to run "command" on all domain member computers:
psexec \\* -u DOMAIN\USERNAME \\server\folder\command

Run it against a text file list instead:
psexec @computerlist.txt -u DOMAIN\USERNAME \\server\folder\command

Run it on a single computer:
psexec \\computername -u DOMAIN\USERNAME \\server\folder\command

I def need to set up a WSUS server, but don't you have to have SQL for that?

theholycow
03-09-2011, 04:12 PM
IIRC, when you install WSUS it'll install whatever SQL server it needs.

Having SQL is not a big deal. You don't have to pay for it, Microsoft provides free versions to support stuff like WSUS and such.

I tried WSUS and found that it wasn't very helpful for me.

stonehenge
03-09-2011, 04:51 PM
WSUS is only helpful if you are the kind of person to go through every update and research before approving them (FTS too many i just approve all) or if you have SO many computers that them downloading updates from off-site locations causes problems.

:imo

We set it up because bawws wanted it but srsly don't need.

This is kind of a shot in the dark since I don't think either of you deal with Macs much, but I'm having a problem here.

I am trying to map two different shares from the same server (using the same username) and it only maps the first one. When I try to map the second, it just opens up the first one even though I specifically entered the path to the second share.

So example:

I Apple+K and enter "smb://bamf.server.seks/shares/datshare" and enter le credentials and now I have "datshare" open.

Cool.

Now I hit Apple+K again and enter "smb://bamf.server.seks/shares/datothershare" and "datshare" pops up.

It isn't a problem with how the shares are setup. If I do the above process on an old iMac, both shares work. I can also successfully map both from a windows box. So it has something to do with the newer version of OSX. FML.

Oh and the server is running 2008 w/ DFS and namespaces and whatnot.

ok, haz another question. Is separate but may help with the previous issue.

Do you use namespaces on an 08 server? I've never dealt with them and I think they are setup incorrectly. Another guy here was going to manage this server, started setting it up, then GTFO so I got stuck with it. Let me give an example of how it's setup now...

The E: drive is where we have all the home directories and shares. Inside E, there are folders for each department and then inside those are Users and Shares directories that contain the obvious.

Ex:

E:\
|- Dept01
|- Users
|- User01
|- Shares
|- Share01
|- Share02
|- Dept02
|- Dept03

etc

Now the dude setup namespaces for the departments, so there is \\Server\Dept01, \\Server\Dept02, etc.

I don't want users accessing those namespaces and I will never map them or anything, is there a reason to have them?

---------- Post added at 09:32 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:30 AM ----------

As a normal user, if I map \\Server\Dept01\Shares\Share01 on a mac, I can move back up the file tree and see the Shares dir, Dept01, and even go all the way back and see Dept01,Dept02,Dept03. I can't see the files IN them because I don't have permission but I can see all the folders because they are namespaces I think.

As you can tell, I should NOT have been put in charge of this server :roflmao:

---------- Post added at 09:34 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:32 AM ----------

on pinche linux we setup a share and thats all the fgts can see :pissedfist:

theholycow
03-09-2011, 05:59 PM
I gots nothin' fer ya. We don't use DFS. I got some experience with it back in like 2007 but I forgot it all.

stonehenge
03-09-2011, 06:06 PM
rofl k

Now I'm thinking it's more of a permissions issue. If they don't have the ability to list contents and whatnot in the Dept01, Users, and Shares folders then they can't go up the tree.

1: Talk about energy efficiency in computers.
2. Suggest we use GPOs available from the EPA.
3. Don't have time for the R&D to adapt to our environment.
4. The higher-ups decide that we'll be using a packaged solution implemented by a vendor.
5. Ok, whatever, sounds like I won't have to do much for it.

The IDEs are pretty old, might as well retire them bishes. The sata drive currently in there is the newest out of all the drives but only 80gbz :|

5 x 300gb RAID 5 for stuffs

Why the fuck does CPU performance have to be so complicated? It used to be simple...clock speed and cache. Now if all they changed was to add the issue of core quantity, that'd still be ok...but there's all different product lines with names that don't help at all.

I have a guy I've worked for for years and he needs more speed. He either needs a new motherboard + CPU + RAM + OS or a new system. I know nothing about modern processors and nothing about pricing.

His budget is tight. He can spend $400, or maybe up to $600 if necessary. He doesn't know it yet but I'm going to do the work for free...he's always paid me well and he deserves some help now that his budget is tight.

He does quite a bit of multitasking so I'm thinking quad core is a good idea. He probably needs 4GB of RAM and 64 bit Windows 7 Professional. I'm not loving what I see on Newegg. He found a shady Craigslist ad that sounds good.
http://providence.craigslist.org/sys/2524991090.html
Only issue I see is that it probably doesn't have properly licensed Windows, and probably not Pro.

Any thoughts? Suggestions?

If you reuse existing PSU, case, drives, etc you could get something like:

$185 Quad 2.8ghz i5: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115076
$60 Compatible Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157241
$30 2x2gb Ram: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231394
$140 W7 Pro 64bit OEM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116992

I believe all that has free shipping so the total is around $415.

I picked the stuff above because it appears to all be compatible, all low-cost, all high-rated, and I prefer Intel over AMD. I haven't built a computer in a while though. lol

It isn't the fastest beast though, the i7s are better. But if he wants to stay under budget and wants quad then the i5 isn't bad afaik.

One of my smartest users had a real
:derp:
moment.

She works in two offices at two different computers. I needed her to leave one logged on so I could do stuff to it while she wasn't at that desk. Here's the email conversation:
If the computer is secured by a locked door, please leave it logged on as you when you move to the other office.
I have no idea what that means so I probably don't have it??
I mean, when you leave the room, do you close the door and lock it or do you leave it wide open? I wouldn't want you to leave the computer logged on if anyone walking by can just sit down and get at your data.
I'm back at my other desk .. forgot to leave the computer on and wouldn't want to for that reason .. wide open

...ok, so she gets it now, I'm not talking some technodoor, just the good old fashioned wooden slab that keeps people out of the office.

Right?

Well, 40 minutes after sending that email she calls me and again doesn't know what I meant.
Yeah, I was just wondering if you lock the door when you leave that office.
How do you do that?
Well, usually there's a thing on the knob.
What does that mean?

I haz a questionne. My laptop is FUBARED beyond all recognition and I finally need to do a fresh install after 3+ years of having it. It was one of the first Gateways to come with Vista. :eek2: Anyway, I'm burning a W7 Professional .iso right now to use since I have no idea where the restore disk is. Was looking at an activation crack and found this. Does it look legit?

Gateway was acquired by emachines. As a brand, I think they still exist, but not owned by the same company anymore.

Pinche HP.

User came to me with new HP tablet. It has an initial configuration wizard that can't be bypassed. It cannot connect to our wifi because our wifi requires you to use a web browser to authenticate. I could manually register it on our network if its MAC address could be found but they don't put that anywhere on it, on the box, etc. User has to take it home before it will do anything...can't even go through the wizard without a connection.

Someone told me today that HP is not going to be making desktop computers anymore. I told him that I thought that was just WebOS (tablets, phones, etc) but he said no, they are going to stop selling desktops and maybe laptops.

Sounds like nonsense to me.

theholycow
08-26-2011, 05:11 PM
That's what I heard. I spent about 2 seconds googling it, saw that they were canceling something, and figured it was true. I'd be relieved if they're not getting out of laptops and desktops, they've been a good source of competitively priced, consistent quality computers.

http://www.zdnet.co.uk/blogs/jacks-blog-10017212/samsung-not-buying-hp-not-quitting-pc-business-10024210/
Samsung Electronics has said it's not buying Hewlett-Packard's PC business, and since companies can often deny what they are up to, it has now said it twice. Meanwhile, HP has had to issue statements to say it is not exiting the PC business, an impression that might have been gained from some shoddy reporting. In sum, the news is that there is no news, and everything continues more or less as before.

However, what will happen to PSG remains a mystery. As I reported last week in HP kills WebOS, may sell off PC division, HP said

"its board of directors has authorized the exploration of strategic alternatives for its Personal Systems Group (PSG). HP will consider a broad range of options that may include, among others, a full or partial separation of PSG from HP through a spin-off or other transaction."

In my opinion, this was a stupid thing to say, in the absence of any viable spin-off plan or potential buyer, such as Samsung. It's bound to make business PC buyers consider their purchases, because they depend on long-term security and supply. However, it doesn't say that HP will actually do anything apart from consider its options, and you'd expect a rational company to consider its options all the time.

Further, even if HP did spin-off PSG, it doesn't necessarily mean that it would stop using the name or the HP and Compaq brands, since these are a significant part of the operation's value. (IBM wouldn't have been able to do the deal with Lenovo without Lenovo getting to use the ThinkPad brand name and products to reassure existing customers.) Apart from some corporate book-keeping, everything would be business as usual.

...yup, as soon as I read that they might spin it off I thought of Lenovo. I imagine they'd just use Compaq as the brand name. Should be fine, just a little annoying since I hate the Compaq name and even after HP bought Compaq, HP-branded stuff tended to be a little better.

stonehenge
08-26-2011, 05:14 PM
Yeah I've always hated Compaq. Being HP owned helped a little I think but like you said, HP stuff still tends to be higher end.

Oh well, I actually liked HPs stuff when it came to desktops and laptops. :(

Looks just like two regular HP Proliant servers. Each box has (8) 1TB drives installed. There's no backplane or anything, and not even a lot of ethernet/iSCSI interfaces.

I had gone to a seminar on it, mainly for the steak lunch and chance of winning an HP Slate (pinche vendor who was putting on the seminar, the two Slates were won by vendor's employees :wank:), and there was a lot of talk about being able to virtualize it. I guess the SAN is actually in software, which I can run wherever the fuck I want, and the two boxen I received are just the physical storage.

Speaking of IT, haz real stupid issue going on. When non-domain computers map a share (weather it is their home directory or a group share) it acts weird. They can create files, delete files, copy existing files to it, but they can't reorganize files once they are there, can't rename files, and can't save straight to it using Office and a lot of other programs.

This only happens on W7. We have mapped the shares using the same credentials on Macs, XP boxes, Vista machines, etc and there are no issues whatsoever. It isn't firewall related or permissions because it works fine on any other box and DOESN'T work on any W7 box from 3 different locations using different shares and credentials.

It's really pissing me off.

Oh I know it isn't worth it but the boss wants me to go as well as 2 other coworkers. I'm on the verge of taking the friday after off so I can drive up the night before, sleep in before the event and then go back and be comfy in the hotel before coming back at a time when traffic isn't retarded. But that would require two nights in a hotel and gas to get up there and back. Riding with the coworker is far cheaper rofl.

I got the SAN figured out, although now I need to find some best practices whitepapers/videos/whatever so I can configure it optimally.

Update on the security camera thing: I emailed tech support. They confirmed: no encrpytion. WHY THE FUCK WOULD THEY MAKE AN iPHONE CLIENT? With the password and video not encrypted a man-in-the-middle attack is a piece of cake, just sniff some packets and you can watch the cameras as well as control the cameras (which can be aimed remotely).
