No calls, in person desktop support. Think of generic IT guy.

Its the same pay scale as sysadmin and I'm tired of servers. Plus, old management changed and was hell. New place has better chance for moving up.

Lync is becoming Skype for Bidness. They pushed the update to WSUS but didn't enable Skype so it did something weird. Lync opened and said Skype but had a popup that said "Your admins haven't enabled this so the program will now reboot and be Lync again"

Lol yeah, your server guys probably haven't enabled "Skype for Business" so it still says/shows Lync. Our icons stayed Skypified too.

Eventually MS will probably force Skype on us and it looks different but pretty much behaves the same. Idgaf

Chrome disabled Silverlight and a bunch of other plugins today. So if you have peeps who need it and can't figure out why it stopped working in Chrome all of a sudden, that's why.

Workaround is to enable it via flags (chrome://flags/#enable-npapi) but Google will remove that flag in September. So at that point, you use another browser if you want Silverlight. Foos should be using HTML5 anyway.

theholycow
04-20-2015, 07:40 PM
Silverlight? Who the fuck ever used it?

I think I may have seen two sites that use it and one was a Microsoft site.

stonehenge
04-20-2015, 07:50 PM
well I already found one department using some dumn software that needs it, I don't think we're going to enable the workaround because it will only last until Sept. Whoever makes that software needs to stop using Silverlight. immfo

Meh. Opera is no Java expert, at least not the old Opera version I use...not sure about post-Chromification.

New Opera is built on webkit/blink back-end from Chrome source. That would be all well and good if they hadn't done that at the height of the "hory shet Google is evil too" era, but more importantly, if they had implemented all the old features. Instead they fucking put out a bare bones piece of shit, which I assume has since regained some of the missing features.

We are truly in the malaise era of web browsers.

What do you guys charge for side work? I rarely do it but now that I'm in desktop support, i've had a few peeps ask. Talked to a few others and I'm thinking $50/hr with a 1 hour minimum. If I do it at their house, the time starts when I sit down at the machine and stops when I leave. If I bring it home, I keep track of the time actually spent sitting at the machine and charge them that. It saves them $ because I can do other stuff while it's scanning/installing/etc. If anyone asks me to drive hella far then I may tack on some kind of travel charge but I'm pretty central here so that shouldn't really be necessary.

Thoughts?

Fatso
04-23-2015, 04:21 PM
50 an hour seems low. If your going to do that, then you should tack on a trip charge or charge time for the trip to their house.

theholycow
04-23-2015, 04:50 PM
$50 first hour, $35/hr after, but I mostly only work for two really nice guys I've been working for for 15+ years and I generally tell them a smaller number, then they write a check for a higher number...

I do the same thing regarding at their place vs. mine.

If I was taking on new customers often I'd probably go higher, DNMFW to deal with people's shit for not a lot of money.

stonehenge
04-23-2015, 05:00 PM
Well I was just referred two people from a coworker who recently decided to stop doing side-stuff. He did $50/hr so I kept that rate. I could start telling new peeps that it's higher. :chin:

But I didn't say any less for hours after the first, I just said $50/hr :cheeky:

First dude says his machine won't boot and says something about drivers or corrupt registry. Hoping I can repair his registry and get it booting. If not, I'll back up his entire HD somewhere and reinstall Vista (lol) because he has the original disc. Luckily, he agreed to let me bring it home and work on it.

Second woman just says her computer is slow. That's it. So I'll defrag it, run a virus scan for fun, see if there's unnecessary crap that runs at login, maybe disable aero or something depending on the OS it's running. If it's super old with no RAM, I'll do what I can and recommend a new machine soon (or just more RAM if the processor is decent).

Getting back into the swing of side-jerbs and desktop. Been working with servers too long :jester:

So, may have jerb with Equifax. Had an interview today, it went very well IMO

...one thing that freaked me out tho was yesterday at my current jerb I got a 10% raise and an iPad Mini 2.

Weird how that happened the day before an interview. I took a half day today, wonder if they think something is up? We had 3 people quit last month...

Wonder if Equifax contacted them? IDK seems more than coincidence...

Hi Hi Hi!

Who wants to help me with port forwarding for Wake on LAN with a DD-WRT tp-link wr842nd version 1 router?

Note that I am willing to send someone my teamviewer information to gget this done. Spent like 5-6hrs on this the past few days, and my patience is being very tested. Hahaha.

What you want wake on lan fer? so you can wake your computer up if you want to connect to it remotely?

race2c
08-09-2015, 11:18 PM
Yeop. The computer is my HTPC/media server, so it doesn't run all the time to save electricity/power.

VmaxEngage
08-10-2015, 12:49 AM
You should just have to enable wake on magic packet on the NIC of the server

It might have to be enabled in the BIOS as well. I have never messed with it personally tho, so that's all I can help with lol

As for the port forwarding, that should be pretty straight forward for that router

race2c
08-10-2015, 12:53 AM
Yeah, but for some reason, I am not able to get it to work from outside the LAN. thus, I am thinking there is something i missed in the DD-wrt setup.

VmaxEngage
08-10-2015, 01:12 AM
do you have an exception put in for the built in firewall on the server?

race2c
08-10-2015, 01:25 AM
Yes, I believe so. I can check later this evening. The previous router build had an exception on ports 7 and 9. Do I need to update exception if the router firmware is different than before?

VmaxEngage
08-10-2015, 01:42 AM
Firmware may changes settings, I know it does on some network devices

You running windows server?

Think you may have to put an exception on its firewall if its running

race2c
08-10-2015, 01:57 AM
Nah, its just windows 8.1 Not that its a full-blown server, but its more just a desktop pc serving as my HTPC/plex setup.

stonehenge
08-10-2015, 02:13 AM
In some rare cases, ISPs will block ports. This usually isnt the case though, unless its port 80 or something.

race2c

race2c
08-13-2015, 06:12 PM
Hhhmmm. I may have to switch it up when I get back tonight.

What other issues could cause that on/off? Driver issues? Note I am on windows 8.1.

The ports on computer are testing as open per various websites. Hmmm. Just thinking iit may be time to replace router.

stonehenge
08-13-2015, 06:47 PM
If websites say the port is open, its prob not be the router.

race2c
08-13-2015, 07:26 PM
Ports open on computer verified that within windows firewall. Wake on LAN works via router web interface (manual wake on) and when connected to LAN (via computer and mobile app).

Port forwarding issues from WAN maybe?

I may install different version of DD-wrt to see if its the build version.

WOL working from the local network but not from outside says that the router/firewall is blocking it.

Ports on the computer showing as open from websites says that the router/firewall is letting it through.

Let me ask you guys a question. Some of these new laptops with Windows 8/8.1 and 10 no longer have the Windows serial key sticker on them anywhere. That's not a problem with 99% of the stuff I work on, because you can just use the restore partition, but what if the hard drive is fucked and I have to do a fresh install from a disk after installing a new hard drive? What do you do then, is there anything you can even do now?

It's not like you can use keyfinder software or find it using a VBScript when the hard drive is fucked.

THE ACTUAL SOLUTION:

Get your hands on some clean installation media. If an official vendor will not give it to you, torrent it. We merely need to get Windows installed onto the machine with the NEW drive you have. The BIOS will at least tell us which version of Windows 8 it is. (If not, assume non-pro for consumer, and pro for business).

Click "skip" when the installer asks for the installation key when prompted. On the next screen, you'll hit CTRL + SHIFT + F3 to get to the "I'm an Admin, let me set up this computer for first time use" mode.

Download RWeverything (this reads the key out of the BIOS on Win8 Machines -- see this thread on how to use it) http://rweverything.com/download/ Then, hit the start button and open up Windows Activation (not the Win8 tile app, there should be a different one that shoots you back to the desktop). It will have an "activate" button. Click it and let it fail activation the first time. Then, it will ask if you want to try with a new key.

Insert key you found with RWeverything. Activate. SUCCESS.

Interesting, will have to try this. I need to download a installation disk for 8. I have one for 7, Vista, and uh even XP still lol. I'll just have it on standby.

I didn't really need it today because the persons laptop was under warranty still yet and they are sending it in to get repaired by HP. I always like to know for the future though.

Still got dat moniez for mah animu waifus though for checking it out, all that matters.

I think there's a place where you can get images of every version of the OS straight from MS for free, you just need to have your own key obviously. Let me see if I can find it.

---------- Post added at 12:07 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:58 AM ----------

It was called digital river and it looks like they took it down. Now you need to enter your key to download the image. And it only works with retail copies so even if you knew it, it wouldn't work since your copy would be OEM. :blahclap: you'll have to find the image elsewhere (torrent)

Chevrolet Fanatic
08-14-2015, 10:01 PM
Yeah I remember digital river. I actually had it bookmarked.

Why must they make everything so fucking difficult for people who work on the computers that their shitty OS is installed on?

I swear, each fucking year they seem to be getting worse and worse.

VmaxEngage

MS lets you create your own bootable media for any version, then all you need is boot from USB and your key then you is good to go.

This used to be a daily thing before it became common to put a key sticker on computers. Before activation was a thing, for customers we liked and trusted we'd use a pirated key or just one of our own keys...and strangers or shitty customers would be told they had to keep looking for the key or buy a new copy of Windows.

Click "skip" when the installer asks for the installation key when prompted.

I must be spoiled by volume licensing and/or server editions. I can't remember the last time I was prompted for a key during installation, unless it was XP or Server 2003. Pretty sure since Vista/2008 it's been keyless install, then it nags about activation later and you have to enter the key before it will activate.

Are LAN/cat5 cables susceptible to failing?

Yes, absolutely. I deal with flaky cables fairly often. Like any wire, the metal core is susceptible to fatigue; plus the connectors can be kinda delicate despite their seeming strength of being a near-solid block of plastic, and the manufacturer (or schmoe crimping cables on-site) can do a shitty job of crimping it, with the wire barely inserted far enough or the cable-piercing barb having bent off to the side, and after X amount of times moving it around it finally starts to quit.

If that happens, it won't affect just one port or function; you'll pretty much have all-or-nothing connectivity, or general flakiness in connectivity, but it's not discriminate by port. However, I suppose some protocol might not take kindly to flaky connectivity.

race2c
08-15-2015, 07:15 PM
Cao - Based on that information, all my internet works on computer so it must not be the cable.

Considering the LAN connections work, remote WOL works via LAN and ports 7/9 both open on computer, I think it has to do with firewall of DD-WRT.

race2c
08-16-2015, 06:16 AM
Welp, I may have finally figured out why the WAN works on/off, and it has to do with the deep sleep function of the MOBO.

In the realtek driver configuration "power management tab" there are 3 choices. One being waking on magic packets, allow NIC to wake computer, and then another to allow the computer to completely shut off power to NIC. Based upon testing, everytime you shut down the computer, even with unchecking the "shut down complete power", the mobo/computer resets the tick marks/choices.

This is an older article talking about windows 7/NICs, but believe this may be the case. https://adeelejaz.com/blog/realteks-network-controller-deep-sleep-mode-issue/

Macs can see normal windows shares. Share a folder on your windows computer, then on the Mac click the desktop, hit Apple+K, type:

If it gives you credential errors, you can specify them like so:

smb://username:[email protected]/sharename

IT folks - what media players play a .el8 media file?

The file is an internet/study session stream that was recorded and then posted for download. Just gotta find a media player that will play it.

Just looked up that extension and it looks like it is a proprietary format created by e-lecta (online course software). From what I'm reading, there isn't a way to play them locally on your computer, you HAVE to use e-lecta's java web player.

There's a way to use their website to play .el8 files saved on other servers (like so: http://e-lectazone.com/tools/play_uni.asp?url=http://www.YourSite.com/YourFile.el8) but I highly doubt that would work with a file on your local machine.

Your instructor should have either sent you a playable link for the e-lecta server or uploaded it somewhere else and gave you a link like I mentioned above.

More info here: http://support.e-lecta.com/eLectaKB/afmmain.aspx?faqid=113

If you have a web server running then you can host the file on it and use a link like I mentioned, otherwise that foo needs to give you guys a playable link.

We are testing software called DatAdvantage by Varonis. It's pronounced "data advantage" but every time I see it the way they spelled/capitalized it I think :richboy:

DatAssassination could be good name for a program that "shreds" files so they can't be recovered.

Hi IT folks!

How do I get a computer to automatically send me an email once it turns on? I tried using SendEmail and this link (http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/send-automated-emails-save-time-sendemail-windows-task-scheduler/), but couldn't get anything to work.

this is windows 8.1.

According to that link, SendEmail sounds like a good tool for the job. Are you able to use SendEmail from the command line for testing but can't get it to work automatically, or are you unable to even successfully test SendEmail manually?

Word, does it work if you just run that line in a command prompt window?

Also, if this (http://caspian.dotconf.net/menu/Software/SendEmail/) is the official page for Sendmail (seems like it is), it was last updated in 2009. It's a simple tool so that may be fine. I'll try to play with it later.

ok, after messing with it for a while, I figured out why it wouldn't send (for me). Google disables SMTP access unless you turn on "Less secure apps" here: https://www.google.com/settings/security/lesssecureapps

I enabled that and now I can send with sendEmail using this line:

sendEmail -f [email protected] -t [email protected] -u "Test Subject" -m "Test message." -s smtp.gmail.com:587 -o tls=yes -xu [email protected] -xp fromaddresspassword

(ew plain text password)

Thanks guys! I was able to figure it out within the Task Scheduler for MS.

Wan - That was really helpful writing it out that way too!

I had to tinker around with the settings. Thinking it had to do with the "less secure apps" checkbox.

Yeah I tried lots of things and it didn't work until i found that checkbox. It doesn't mention SMTP either so it wasn't obvious.
