The October issue of Hakuskensha's shōjo manga magazine LaLa has confirmed on Tuesday that Bisco Hatori's romantic comedy manga Ouran High School Host Club will end with a 52-page chapter in the next issue on September 24. The magazine had already announced in June that the series was entering its final story arc.

In the story, high school freshman Haruhi pretends to be a boy so that she can take part in the wealthy school's Host Club, to which she owes a large debt. The manga launched in LaLa in August of 2003, and Viz Media licensed the manga and launched its North American release in July of 2005. The manga has been among the top-ranked titles both in Japan and on the New York Times manga best seller list.

In April 2006, a 26-episode anime began in Japan with Maaya Sakamoto as Haruhi and Mamoru Miyano as Host Club president Tamaki. Funimation licensed and released the anime in North America in 2008.

The staff of Otakon confirmed his passing with MADHOUSE studio founder Masao Maruyama. Maruyama had wrote on his Twitter account on Tuesday night in Japan that an important director of the studio had suddenly passed away. However, Maruyama declined to name the director at the time.

Kon began working as a manga creator on such works as Kaikisen (1990) before deciding to delve into the anime industry with the art design of Hiroyuki Kitakubo and Katsuhiro Otomo's Roujin Z video in 1991. He then worked on the script and art direction of "Magnetic Rose," a segment of Otomo's 1995 science-fiction anthology film Memories.

Kon first drew worldwide attention with his feature film directorial debut, the psychological suspense film Perfect Blue, in 1997. He would follow that with a string of critically acclaimed anime projects: Millennium Actress (2001), Tokyo Godfathers (2003), Paranoia Agent (2004), and Paprika (2006). At the time of his passing, Kon was working at MADHOUSE on a new feature film called Yume-Miru Kikai.

ANN interviewed Kon in 2008 as he was beginning work on Yume-Miru Kikai.

Writer/director Akitaro Daichi reported on his Twitter account on Wednesday that key animator Shojuro Yamauchi had passed away on Tuesday. The two creators had worked together on Prince Mackaroo (Ojarumaru). A fellow writer/director, Sakichi Sato, had reported on his Twitter account earlier on Wednesday that another "legendary anime director" had passed away in addition to Satoshi Kon.

Yamauchi worked on dozens of anime works as a key animator — the artist who draws the key frames for the other artists to model their frames in an animated sequence. His many works include Conan, the Boy in Future, Dagger of Kamui, Lupin III: The Legend of the Gold of Babylon, Lupin III: The Secret of Mamo. After Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro, he worked on several Studio Ghibli films including Isao Takahata's Grave of the Fireflies and Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away.

He also served as animation director on One Pound Gospel, Prince Mackaroo, Sherlock Hound, and Kiteretsu Daihyakka. As recently as last year, he was still drawing frames for Mainichi Kaasan and Kawa no Hikari.

IG Port, the parent company of the anime studios Production I.G and Xebec, announced on Monday that film producer Avi Arad has been installed as chairperson of Production I.G's American affiliate, Production I.G., LLC. Through Arad's connections, Production I.G., LLC. plans to strengthen and expand its global animation production efforts and business development. Production I.G established its American arm in Los Angeles in May of 1997.

Arad has been prominent in Hollywood industry circles as a major producer behind the Marvel Studios film franchises such as X-Men, Spider-Man, and Iron Man. Arad is still involved in the Marvel films, but he resigned as the head of Marvel Studios to form his own production company in 2006.

Arad is also involved in DreamWorks' upcoming live-action adaptation of Masamune Shirow's science-fiction manga Ghost in the Shell. Production I.G already adapted Ghost in the Shell into a well-known anime franchise.

Production I.G had previously confirmed at Anime Expo in July that it is working with Arad to create a comic titled Innocent (not to be confused with Production I.G's animated film Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence). Arad is also involved as an executive advisor in Namco Bandai's efforts to adapt the Pac-Man video games for television again.
