245 lb·ft cow and a 140 hp

theholycow

...compared to:
Original spec is 205 ft-lb at 2000rpm and 125hp at 4000rpm for the 1980 4.1 (252)...doubt I'm getting that much. What's the rating for the 1983 307?

Makes sense.

What stainless are you pulling? I'm not familiar with what there is...interior trim under the doors maybe? Mine has various bits of chrome and spun aluminum gauges.

Speaking of gauges, I need a fuel gauge, doesn't need to work...I have the face with water temp/fuel/volts but no can for it. There's a small rectangular hole where a vacuum or boost gauge is supposed to be, but I have a 2 inch vacuum gauge where my PRNDL was (and no vacuum bar meter) so I'm probably going to put my high beam indicator there (currently located behind steering wheel trim, lights up blue around the steering column). I don't want to risk destroying my gauge.

I think my new gauge face may have a low fuel light too, now that you mention it.

i thinking after 140 mph speed in oem locations tach where fuel gauge is and a small fuel gauge in the indicator. as for the bright light just a led in the wood above would work. idk what to put in the clock place maybeye a quad gauge.

theholycow
08-20-2012, 03:12 PM
My dad used to be a master at the brake. When he did vinyl siding all the time he'd wrap the window casings. He could bend all kinds of crazy crap on the first try. He's out of practice now.

Oh, and that nut/bolt that holds it on? I couldn't find one to fit the threaded hole so I just found one that fit through it loosely and used a nut. FIDIL.

Oh yeah, you can can see my slave bracket in that pic too. One of these days I should wirebrush and paint it.

---------- Post added at 10:12 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:09 AM ----------

I should also brace it, it flexes a bit when I operate the clutch and I'm sure it'll eventually fatigue. Or, you know, I could do what I originally planned: Pay a machinist to make a decent one out of 1/4" stock.

shootermcgavin003
08-20-2012, 03:18 PM
you can buy them for bolting a 5 speed to sbb too

theholycow
08-20-2012, 03:36 PM
I was unable to find an appropriate slave bracket pre-fab. I don't think any were made for the BOP bellhousing, which was only ever used with a rod linkage.

shootermcgavin003
08-20-2012, 03:42 PM

I just got a great idea. I got this OnStar/compass/temp mirror from the junkyard, for the compass and temp. I just realized I could hook other stuff up to the OnStar buttons/lights...especially my trunk release! When I put in the trunk release I used a toggle switch that I had on-hand and let's face it, using a toggle switch in a momentary application sucks. I've been looking for a safety-covered pushbutton (like the kind used to fire missiles) but I could use two of the OnStar buttons (if I only use one then I could accidentally pop the trunk while adjusting the mirror). Then I could use the freed-up toggle switch to operate the electrochromatic dimming of the mirror...

shootermcgavin003
08-20-2012, 05:08 PM
my car has a trunk button dont yours?

---------- Post added at 04:08 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:07 PM ----------

its a auto dimming mirror so it just need a key switch source to it and it will work like oem

theholycow
08-20-2012, 05:20 PM
Mine didn't come with a trunk release. I grabbed one at the junkyard but didn't take the button at that time, for some reason.

Pin 5 (gray) is "Automatic Day/Night Mirror Signal" and pin 16 (pink) is "Automatic Day/Night Mirror Low Reference". Schematic shows them going through the Driver's Door Module. I thought it was all self-contained until I saw that while looking up which wire needs power.

shootermcgavin003
08-20-2012, 05:25 PM
what im saying is though the wires that need power just run them key switched source so it will work without toggle switch

---------- Post added at 04:22 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:21 PM ----------

my truck release is just a button its in the glove box on mine. yours a pw pl car?

---------- Post added at 04:25 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:22 PM ----------

theholycow
08-20-2012, 05:26 PM
If I do that then it will be dimmed whenever the key is on. If I'm going for that I'll just put tint on it...no need to get wires involved.

shootermcgavin003
08-20-2012, 05:39 PM
the ones ive seen use the sensor on the bottom of the mirror to auto dim. i think the module in the drivers door your speaking off is like my moms blazer drivers side door dims along with the mirror

theholycow
08-20-2012, 05:42 PM

theholycow
08-25-2012, 12:51 AM
Why, what's the fuel line like?

shootermcgavin003
08-26-2012, 02:09 PM
the fuel filter housing is right against the water line on the intake. so its almost impossible to get the fuel line off on a 307. i broke mine trying to get it off. made one out of rubber line to fix it but barley got it in there cause of the water line.

---------- Post added at 01:09 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:07 PM ----------

if i was actally keeping this motor id run a braded line a banjo fitting and external in line fuel filter.

theholycow
08-26-2012, 02:23 PM
When I did mine the flare nut was seized to the line. I too ended up using rubber hose, just for a few inches. I had to put hose clamps on it to round out the kinks where it makes a sharp right angle. If I did it again I think I could bend some pipe or use a piece that's already bent...I've got a whole 1994 S10's set of fuel/etc pipe to cut from.

Do you have rims, unadorned steelies, or steelies with wheelcovers? I want a way to secure my wheelcovers so they stay stuck firmly on. I'm thinking of getting some kind of center cap for steelies that attaches securely to the lug nuts, then putting a screw through the wheelcovers into the center cap.

shootermcgavin003
08-26-2012, 02:37 PM
well i had hubcaps but i ebayed them so i running steelies. however my oem hubcaps had a center thing that bolted to the lug nuts made of metal and then the hubcap bolted to it right in the center. basically oem of what your wanting.

---------- Post added at 01:36 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:33 PM ----------

i had to get a peice of brake line cut it and put clamps on it for mine it works though. mine was pretty seized up and little stripped. i had to cut the line then put a breaking bar on the housing to get it out. btw hf ratching breaking bar is the greatest tool ever invented.

what happened to the rally buick wheels on your car thought it had the nice wheels

theholycow
08-26-2012, 03:04 PM
I had a 1987 Deville with a system like you describe. It was FWD and probably had a totally different bolt pattern so I didn't bother looking for it, but now I know I can look for retainers from a 1983 LeSabre.

My Rally wheels are rusted and nasty. Also, as part of being cheapjewcao, I buy used tires already mounted on steelies that fit my car so I don't have to get them mounted (and I can swap in my yard easily so I can put on worn tires during the summer, all-season tires in fall/spring, and studded winter tires in the winter).

So, since I usually have not just steelies but rusted, unmatched steelies, I've acquired wheelcovers. These meet my aerodynamic wishes and OEMness standard, as they were standard equipment on the 1980 LeSabre. Eventually I would like to get racing discs but these are functionally pretty close, they fit nice and tight to the wheel's rim, they look decent, and I got the first three pretty cheap (as well I'm now getting a bunch for free).

I bought four pizza pans to make pizza pan racing discs but never did finish that project.

and dem gauges

theholycow
11-26-2012, 12:34 AM
That gauge is where the PRND21 display was for the slushbox. It's a vacuum gauge from Harbor Freight. I see now that they've discontinued it and replaced it with a boost/vacuum gauge...lame.

Anyway it was a perfect fit for that spot, although I haven't put in the effort to devise a mount to make it stable and well-aligned so it's usually a bit cockeyed.

http://hfreviews.com/thumbnails/98482.gif
http://i695.photobucket.com/albums/vv315/theh0lyc0w/ProjectChristinesloHackensteinberg/p_00010.jpg

Unfortunately the faux woodgrain was rubbed off by a larger rubber-backed vacuum gauge I had resting on top of the steering column before.

I also have one of these, had it for a year but haven't done anything with it yet:
http://www.buickfarm.net/components/com_redshop/assets/images/product/1162010204637-Picture.JPG
It would take the place of my one huge fuel gauge. It's just the guts and face, no lens or can, so I want to get a gauge from a junkyard to hack instead of hacking my own...but they're surprisingly tough to find.

Want a tach and an oil pressure gauge. No idea where I can mount them. Would love this series, would love the entire set:
http://contentinfo.autozone.com/znetcs/product-info/en/US/atm/1594/image/2/
They're ridiculously expensive but they look great and the tach is available in 5000 and 7000 RPM versions as well as the more common 8000-10000 ones. Not sure how many RPM this engine is good for but I don't think I've ever hit 5000.

The rest will be in a pod either under or on top the dash. If i can fit it i may run those all in one gauges but im thinking there too big. But if they would fit i wouldnt need any gauge pods. I want a tach speedo fuel volt water oil and trans gauge.

My 350 will be buick red. Buicks didnt go blue till 75 when all gms went blue. It was only a pontiac or caddy deal prior to that. Makes sense for you however pontiacs are blue. Id do original pontiac blue though if it was me. Again id prob not have a lt1 in a pontiac though. I like them to be pontiac powered.

I could use one of my existing gauges but I'd hate to hack into it...I'd rather hack a spare.

Mine don't, they bolt off of the car but then they have tabs that you have to bend just to get to the first step of taking them apart...haven't tried it, expecting them to be brittle, so I don't know what comes after that.

It's hard to tell from those photos. It's definitely not exactly the same as what's in my car. Looks like it'd probably work.

I don't have a photo of what I have, surprisingly, but here are photos of the new gauge guts/face that need a housing/lens:

Also, I gotta thank http://www.BuickFarm.net for hooking me up. They've got a crapload of NOS parts and Doug, after I explained why I wanted a non-matching part, sent me those photos so I could use them to guess if it would work or not. It wasn't long afterwards that I had the item in my possession.

Hazzard, we have a problem. How do I package the rear window trim for mailing? It's like 6 feet long and would be damaged if bent. I wonder if an appropriate mailing tube exists...

...ok looked on office supply store sites, only tube long enough comes in a bulk pack for like $150. :jester: Maybe I could splice two tubes.

:hmm: Maybe I could get something from a plumbing supply store that might have a box used for shipping small pipes, or an auto parts store from shipping non-coiled steel brake line.

No power. Drivers side mirror should be the same. Passenger side mirror was not included with the car...previous owner screwed on a cheap aftermarket mirror.

I suspect that the only options were the 4.1, AM/FM stereo, air conditioning, landeau top, and rally wheels.

Wife bought me a proper, matching, OEM-replacement passenger side mirror for xmas. It's electric...I'll have to find a place for a switch, or just use it manually. If it holds its adjustment then I don't care to mess with it.

Since the aftermarket mirror isn't mounted in the OEM location I'll have two screw holes to fix. How do I do that?

stonehenge

Wasn't the previous owner your dad or grandpa or something?

theholycow
12-04-2012, 08:00 PM
My maternal grandfather bought it new. He died and we gave it to my paternal grandmother. Various hacks that it came with (dome light wires with household lamp cord, that mirror, brackets used to raise seat height, cupholders screwed into door panel) might be my maternal grandfather's fault, my dad's fault, or fault of the mechanic that my dad brought it to. Lamp cord (and wire nuts IIRC) must be maternal grandfather's fault, he was an electrician. Seat height brackets are not his fault, I remember dad wanted the seat higher for paternal grandmother...as I remember he said he sent it to an upholstery shop to have padding added but obviously I remember wrong.

I want to know who did the undercoating. If they're still around and still using the same product/process, I want to send business their way, everything that was undercoated is miraculously rust-free 32 years later.

---------- Post added at 02:00 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:59 PM ----------

Maternal grandfather almost certainly was at fault for the cupholders, I remember the car sitting in his garage with a cup in the cupholder and a paper towel stuck to the bottom of the cupholder...also the screws aren't the screws my dad would have used.

Yup. You need a right-angle (or sharper) pick or piece of baling wire/coat hanger bent like one. Either of the two on the right in this picture will work:
http://www.harborfreight.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/small_image/160x/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/i/m/image_16048.jpg

I keep a 2 inch piece of baling wire with a bend like that in my glovebox.

You pull the knob out to turn the lights on, spin it until the latch is facing up, hang the pick on the metal tab, pull the tab with the pick, and the knob slides right off. Then you unscrew the bezel behind it by hand. Installation is reverse, but no pick required, just push the knob on.

Maybe with wood spokes those wouldn't be too bad...still not as awesome as the OEM wheel though.

I don't mind my thin steering wheel rim, it allows me to put on different covers for a change of surface without it being too thick, though I'd trade that for a nice finished wood.

Ok, that's less ugly than that squared-off one you posted. I don't love it but it doesn't make me homicidal.

There was a blue Deville in what previously was my favorite junkyard before they were bought out, wish I had gotten the steering wheel and tilt/telescope column as well as the cloth split bench seat. Tried to get the wheel but failed, when I went back next week to try again somebody had ruined it getting it off. Did get the visors, dome light/garage door opener compartment/visor support, Caddy steering wheel logo, and center high mount stop light.

theholycow

Mine only came with a suction cup mount, but the suction cup jammed tightly into my truck's ash tray and loosely into :gB:'s.

After the transmission project I removed the ash tray since it can't be used with the shifter there, and I put in a panel for switches/gauges/etc. As it stands there's just two switches and two holes pre-drilled for future switches, mostly a blank panel.
http://i695.photobucket.com/albums/vv315/theh0lyc0w/ProjectChristinesloHackensteinberg/p_00121.jpg

Top switch is driving lights. Bottom switch is trunk popper...couldn't find a button so I flip the switch on-off quick. I'll be wiring that up to my OnStar mirror's buttons now that I have it.

I constantly come up with shit I want to use those switch spots for.
- If I get the driving/fog combo lights I previously described the two switches there now will be for those lights.
- I'd like to lower my idle and use a switch to operate the A/C high idle solenoid, which pushes the throttle open when A/C is engaged (except that I have it disconnected because I don't need it for A/C).
- A/C cancel switch so I can run the defroster without A/C or use "Max A/C" as a non-A/C recirc setting.
- A/C on switch so I can run A/C through the floor vents.
- The not-so-auto-dim mirror hack I've previously mentioned.
- HVAC blower fan cancel, since it runs whenever the ignition is on and sometimes I don't want it running.
- Dome override
- Accessory power with ignition off.
- Ignition kill switch.
- Anti-tailgating oil slick expulsion control. :trolljester:
- Maybe some kind of distributor advance adjustment.
- I can probably think of a million other cool things that I'll never do.

While digging through my notes for all of that I found another idea I had: A vacuum switch to turn off the A/C compressor under heavy throttle.

bad thing is thats a hot air car and has prob a 150 horse power good to build though.

theholycow
05-21-2013, 12:16 PM
Speaking of hot air...turns out that when I brought my car to the professionals to handle the exhaust manifold bolts, they removed the shield so my intake's hot air pipe isn't getting hot air. It was probably rotted anyway. Any idea where I can get a replacement, and how I could hack it on without taking those bolts out?

Also: I have a Sunpro oil pressure gauge with electric sender. I went to install the sender and realized that it may not work. The space where the oil pressure switch is is small and buried in a hole between components, up against the frame. I don't think I can get tools in there. I don't think the sender would fit even if I could. Also if I replace the switch then I have to do something about the electric choke, which depends on the switch. I'd either have to find another signal that the engine is running, use a manual switch, or use a hose and tee to hook up both the switch and gauge sender. Is there anywhere else I can put the sender instead?

shootermcgavin003
05-21-2013, 10:22 PM
the 350s get hot air through the heads i figured the 4.1 would be the same. also on a 350 its up on the right side toward the front. it has plenty of room to clear on it. it is under the alt and all on it. im not as familiar with a 4.1 but assumed they would be same thing really.

as for the plate junker is the only thing else i know of or new replacement if there is one. i dont know if you need it really.

theholycow
05-29-2013, 01:39 PM
You don't need the exhaust manifold shield/stove, but it helps with making the engine warm up faster so you get heat sooner in the winter (fucking New England), helps with driveability/fuel economy, etc. I was wondering why my fuel economy is lower...that means I'm paying for this missing part every day. I drive 80 miles per day, after all.

Found an alternate location for the oil pressure sender but I don't love it:
http://h-body.org/dave/Building%20the%20SFI%20Vega.htm
About halfway down that page it is described as "sender pick-up coming of the right galley plug in the back of the block" and photographed. It would require me to pull back the transmission and I think remove the flywheel to get access to that plug.

A further thought on using the existing oil pressure switch location: That fucker's probably seized in there badly and there may be serious carnage if I disturb it.

Oil filter sandwich adapters exist but are expensive. Drat.

shouldnt be since it gets hot and all rick should be easy to get out mine was. and for your heat passage do you not have any in the intake?

theholycow
05-30-2013, 01:28 AM
The only part missing is the exhaust manifold shield that funnels heat into the hose that goes to the intake snorkel. The hose and snorkel are complete.

I couldn't get access to the OEM oil pressure switch with a camera but I took photos of stuff near the base of the oil filter that might work. Any thoughts on these bolts?
