Teen bootcamp instead of jail?

Instead of being senteced to five years in jail for assault, someone i know was sentenced to doing teen boot camp instead! im not to sure what this program is all about, but could someone please explain this?

Most folks would rather go to jail. Teenage boot camp (http://www.allofftopic.com/) is just what it sounds like. Young offenders are treated like young recruits into the military. Their heads are shaved; they wake up before dawn; they exercise non-stop. They are whipped into shape for about 60-90 days. Drill sergeants drill and drill and drill them.

Teen boot camps are correctional programs for troubled teens in a military-style environment. The purpose of these camps is to provide a way to divert very troubled kids to a hard core rehabilitation facility to give the penal system an option rather than sending a violent teenager to jail. They exist to give young offenders a second chance and reduce prison populations and costs.

There's a lot of information in here (http://www.allofftopic.com) about teen boot camps that I found helpful.
