Since quite a few of us smoke cigars in some form or another, we might as well have a thread for it.

IDGAF if it's a $20 cigar or a two for $1.95 from the gas station.

Since no one else knows wtf you're talking about...

One of my uncles from MX who has a lot of money came up for my wedding. My brother came from Texas too and brought some cigars. He had bought a few $7 cigars and then some cheaper ones. When my uncle came up, my brother gave him a $7 (a nice one as far as we're concerned). My uncle smoked like an inch of it and then asked how much it was. My bro said 7 dollars and he was like

:notbad:

then smashed it and went back inside. My brother was like

:yuno: THAT SHIT WAS $7

Used to have a Tinder Box in the mall. They rolled their own cigars, and for $3 you could not beat them. Even better was when you went in while they were being rolled, it was like an art form lol

Usually stick to Acid's, or RJ. I feel the more expensive, the shittier the taste lol but thas just me

Had some chocolate/coffee infused cigars once, and I liked them a lot. I have no idea what they were called tho :emo:

I like a nice 'spensive cigar but I don't like sitting outside for hours smoking them and I don't like spending the money on them, especially when my humidor doesn't work and they go dry.

I need to find somewhere local to buy decent mini-cigars. For now, I'm sticking with swishers, phillies, backwoods, etc. because they are cheap, don't take forever to smoke, and I like the flavor

Blake, have you tried the chocolate Phillies? They are pretty damn good for being cheap.

:word:, I am not a fan of a cigar that takes numerous hours to smoke. A good 30-60 minute cigar burn is good for me. Of course, depending on the burntime, the tobacco can produce a burnt flavor/taste to the smoke.

Oh yeah, samplers are your friend. One of the best ways to sample a variety of manufacturers, wrappers, types, tobaccos, etc. Plus, you can always find free shipping links for Cigars International.

As far as the Cuban trade embargo, there are plenty of other options out there. The mentality of "cuban cigars are the best" is hype. Try out a good oliva, good rocky patel, torano, etc, and you will keep to those. :imo

Partially true...........they grow good tobacky in coobah which is why people like Cuban cigars.

Fact: Cuban cigars were popular before the embargo.

If you like smaller cigars your going to want to stick to a panatela or the more common corona - not the presidente or churchill

Cao - what are you looking for?

If you want to buy online, famous-smoke is having a big sale (coupons and such). Also, if you want to save money there is cigarmonster.com and cigarbid.com which are like auction/sale sites for cigars.

Acids are flavor infused cigars. If you aren't really sure what he likes, you could pick him up a sampler on famous-smoke or other websites (cigarsinternational, jr cigars, similar).

Got a chance to do some recon while babysitting nephew. Saw 3 different cigars in his humidor (glass top, wasn't going to open it).

1. Cusano 18 Double Connecticut Churchill

2. Avo Uvezian.
http://www.miamicigarshop.com/Avo-Puritos-Cigars_p_1101.html

3. Puros Indios
http://www.purosindioscigars.com/PurosIndios/Default.aspx

I was unable to get more detail on exactly which varieties the Avos and Puros are but the links go to pages whose pictures match the labels, rather than merely the same brand.

"Churchill" specifies the size/shape, right? They were all the same length and diameter.

So, does any of that mean anything about what he likes, other than merely more of the same ones?

I prefer Toro and Torpedo.

Looks like he prefers medium strength non infused for that humidor. Acid is an infused brand for the most part and he should be keeping those in a separate humidor.

I would get him an Drew Estates Sampler and Patel bros medium sampler.

So, in the meantime I've taken up pipe smoking. It's quite pleasant. It's got some real advantages over cigars. Can smoke pipe tobacco indoors without leaving a permanent smell, and while smoking it smells nice to other occupants of the room (wife loves the smell). Can smoke a little bit or a lot. Can keep the cost way down and smoke more (even if smoking high quality) for much less money. No nasty cigar mouth the next morning. No humidor; if you buy it in a tin then you can age it for years in the sealed tin, or after opening it you can stick it in a mason jar.

Of course there are some disadvantages too. It takes more effort, practice, skill. You can't put it down for a few minutes and expect it to be lit when you pick it up. Gotta keep taking small puffs ("sipping") at least a few times per minute. You need to use and maintain equipment. With cigars there's just the humidor, but with pipes you ought to clean them often (a few times per session at least). If you're going somewhere to smoke you need to bring equipment. Gotta re-light often (less with experience, I assume), and manage the tobacco and ash in the pipe.

I'm smoking out of corncob pipes. They're cheap, they're very easy (no need to break them in, season them, build cake, whatever), they're pleasant. I have a Missouri Meerschaum, the only brand name that I know of in cobs, and some eBay Chinese ones. The MM isn't expensive ($5-10) but man those eBay ones are $1.50.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/271261977585
Can buy a bunch and give some away, use for decoration (I've got one sticking out of the beak of a wooden parrot on my desk at work), pre-load a few for the day, dedicate one to each different blend you smoke, use them disposably, whatever. They smoke every bit as nicely as the MM, though with a slightly less free draw. They probably won't last as long due to lack of finish (just a raw dried out cob material, apparently not treated at all), but that same lack of finish is much more interesting to feel and see.

For the tobacco I bought a sampler pack from these guys:
http://www.milantobacco.com/milanpipetobacco.htm
Also a big bag of Admiral's Choice Cherry Cavendish drugstore tobacco. That cheap stuff is tough to keep lit even after drying it for a few days.

All in all I'm enjoying it.

I picked up a pipe and bag of vanilla tobacco from a Walgreens years ago. Smoking a pipe is smooth as fuck, so much enjoys. I didn't take care of the tobacco and ended up throwing it away. I need to clean out the pipe, buy a new tip/filter/whatever they call it and get into it again.

Plus, feel like a sir while smoking pipe.

theholycow
12-16-2013, 01:05 AM
Remove the filter. Most pipe smokers reportedly prefer no filter.

Prolly didn't need to throw away the tobacco. If it dried out too much it can be rehydrated. If it got moldy then it's no good, of course. I have some tobacco that is 7-10 years old that I bought to experiment with rolling, two packs, one was open. I tried the open one today, it smokes well and is still flavorful. The sealed one will surely be good, people purposely age sealed pipe tobacco for years (granted that's not cheap drugstore crap in a plastic pouch, it's quality stuff in tins).

stonehenge
12-16-2013, 01:41 AM
good news everyone (cao),

I just checked and didn't throw it away like I'd thought. It was rolled up in the back of a drawer and it smells delicious. It's Blender's Gold brand, Burley and Black flavor but it smells like vanilla. It's not moldy and it still has some moisture to it, not dried out. :datass:

The pipe I have is a Dr. Grabow Grand Duke:

If it's not all gunked up, pipe cleaners should suffice. Maybe a little water on the pipe cleaner. Regular pipe cleaners are different from the stuff you find in the Walmart craft supplies aisle. I finally picked up a pack of them today.

Went to a smoke shop today to acquire some Carter Hall tobacco, recommended as consistent, easy to light, and also a good utility tobacco for breaking in new pipes and clearing "ghost" from previous tobaccos. While there, wife bought me an early Christmas gift today, a Fujima FP109.

I figure I'll throw them away when they're saturated and icky.

The shop had something for everybody. Pipe smokers, roll-your-own cigaretters, cigars, weed smokers, hookah, e-cig, etc. I saw jesty little mini corncob pipes for $1, grabbed one. I figure it's lightweight, might be easy to clench and smoke while driving.

Go to a cigar shop that has bulk pipe tobacco in jars. Most of the jars will contain aromatics that smell sweet but you don't get much of that in the actual taste. Sniff some English blends, find one that smells like a campfire, and give that one a try. That style isn't as popular but it's so yummy. Also grab a little of their best seller which is bound to be Lane 1Q (possibly rebranded though), a decent aromatic.

more like it. I can't even be around people who smoke or have the smell on their clothes. My asthma is pretty bad.

Damn, that's a real bummer. I didn't know it could work like that, I would have figured you'd need to directly inhale before it would be a problem.

That's why I was surprised I didn't have an asthma attack or some shit, I was like "what the fuck guys, you let me smoke a whole cigar?" lolz

Yeah it's weird, if I'm in an enclosed room with someone that smokes and has the smell on their clothes it triggers a reaction in me.
